Garage sales are pretty dead in my area. I went to TWO community-wide garage sales today on my way to and from an art festival. One community had only three sales going on, the other had two. There was absolutely nothing interesting to me at any of them.

I can remember when community-wide garage sales were quite the event. You tried to find a parking spot and you walked around. There were always lots and lots of things to buy.

Even when there IS what looks like a great sale, sometimes there's something wrong. Last year, I stopped at one and I could smell the Eau de Feline all the way from the street. As I neared the garage, it got stronger and stronger. I was a good 20 feet from the garage when I turned back; my eyes were starting to water. I can't imagine buying anything that was in that garage. You'd never get the smell off.

And then you get the sales where the sellers have a very skewed view of what people will pay. Ridiculous prices on items. I seldom "bargain" at garage sales. If there's a price that I think is reasonable, I'll pay it. I won't bargain. Having had garage sales of my own in the past, I know how frustrating it is to be selling something for a quarter and they want to bargain it down to a nickel. If it seems too expensive for what it is, I either just don't go for it or I offer what I think is a reasonable price, never a low-ball.

I have met some really lovely people at garage sales. I've been offered a water, tea, soft drink and sat down and yapped with people for quite a while. We've laughed and talked.

I've given up having Garage Sales. Some people turn up about an hour before it will start, looking for the best deals. And sometimes I can wait all day without any sales. I've decided to put all my stuff into boxes and am having Red Nose call to donate everything. Red Nose raises awareness and funds to support families affected by stillbirth, miscarriage, SIDS and other
early childhood losses. I know it will be doing some good.

Maybe if you used emoji's instead of making them read?

Garage sales are pretty dead in my area.
I think garage sale are a dying custom. My sales have taken a geometric progression downward in the last 3 years. With online sale sites like Amazon or eBay, people can order what they want without leaving their homes. Added to the fact people are uncertain about the economy and are holding onto their money. Also, with gas prices well overt $4 a gallon here, they may not be as willing to drive willy-nilly around on the outside chance they might find something.

But I never know if I don't try.

The local convenience store won't let me put a notice on their bulletin board. They say it's only for non-profit or charity events. I tried to persuade them by saying it was a community event. Not swayed. Yes, a community event, but it's people selling for their own profit.
