Pot edibles linked to cardiovascular issues in recent UC San Francisco study

Pot edibles consumed regularly can lead to cardiovascular disease or damage according to recent UC San Francisco study. Direct cause not proven yet but a study compared cardio health/issues of both pot smokers and edible eaters and both groups showed damage or increased risk of cardio issues.

The noted that blood vessel dilation seems to be affected in both pot smokers and eaters. Regular or chronic users were defined as consuming or smoking pot at least 3 times a week for a year.

In other words pot or thc is turning out not to be the benign drug many assume it is. It's a drug or chemical. That's really all one has to know.

I always figured that if something altered how you felt that it certainly couldn’t be good for you or not have any bad side effects. I had read about this before and I am not surprised. I know a lot of boomers that use pot on a daily basis and not just to sleep at night. I’ve told them all, and only one person has given it up.

It's a plant!

Seriously who cares anymore.. your gonna freaking croak anyway you might as well go happy. Besides everything in this world causes something. :)
Actually, the reason I looked into it is because I was having so much trouble sleeping since I’ve gotten older and many people reported that it really helped them sleep.

While, it’s true that we are all old and will eventually die I don’t want to do anything that’s going to cause me to be disabled. I want to live as healthy for as long as possible. It’s not length of life that matters to me but quality.

Not at all surprising but probably only a possible issue for a minority. Google AI:

Cannabis use, particularly smoking, can cause a temporary increase in heart rate, often by 20-50 beats per minute. This effect can last for several hours after use. Studies have shown that with the most potent THC cannabis cigarettes, heart rate accelerations of up to 121% above baseline have been observed. While not everyone experiences the same increase, cannabis use is generally associated with tachycardia, or a rapid heartbeat.

For those that don't use it for a genuine medical issue, this person recommends DO NOT use it daily like so many in this era that given legalization now do so. Many have switched from their former daily after work alcohol drinking to do so. In other words, their life due to their own choices was already boring. In decades past given illegality, higher cost, and lack of consistent access, few users were daily consumers.

That regular use narrative is especially being pushed across the industry for self serving reasons that means more sales. Very easy to descend into daily increasing constant use with decreasing average enjoyment. With more frequent use it is certain to affect a range of body chemical homeostasis levels that we older folks used to describe as being "mellow" regardless of whether that is unhealthy to specific individuals.

But some pot is mixed with other things which might be undesirable. BTW, I read an article that said many dispensaries were selling pot that had lots of bugs mixed in.
Well I don't know about all that but I but I have some that is good. Doesn't seem to have anything else in it but it's not edible . It's the weed itself.

When I was very young I could tell if something else was added. Back then it didn't stop me from having a little.

All things in moderation is okay with me.

What about fentanyl and crushed glass?
‘Tis why I used to grow my own.

Maybe one of the studies was small, but there have been much larger studies... this from Stanford Medicine.

Marijuana linked to heart disease; supplement may mitigate risk, study reports

And The American College of Cardiology's study was with more than 4 million people.

Cannabis Users Face Substantially Higher Risk of Heart Attack - American College of Cardiology.

Thank you for the additional links, Kate.

I've read thru much of the first one and it's more informative and substantive than the small study.

In addition it also points to a supplement that's from certain beans, that might likely lower the undesirable effects, while not reducing the pain reducing and other helpful ones.

I haven't yet looked at the 2nd study you referenced.
Thanks again.

Interesting link,
Yet they do note themselves, that the study has limitations to what can be guessed from it.

For one, it was extremely small, with only 55 participants.

I'm just pointing out that this was not a massive or conclusive study in itself.

Maybe pot users are more likely to skip exercise or eat too many potato chips.

I only use 1/8th a small cube when I use for sleep... I do not use every day though

I am not trying to be crass ya'll - in reference to my other post about edibles. But I do think people- in general literally worry so much over these studies. I would be way more concerned over the micro plastics in EVERYTHING - and

Don't do anything 'to cause me to be disabled' and quality life.

Exactly

Chance of stroke also increased in this study. The thc seems to hamper blood vessels from dilating. People might think they're gettng high and might not even care if they overdose or don't wake up one day. Have a stroke a heart attack one's life will be changed for ever. Especially in old age. That goes for most optional drugs.

They're already issues with pot smokers because joints have 7-11 times more particulate matter than a cigarette. Throw in the thc a cardio event is that much more likely.

With that study also read they made sure there were no smokers. But a lot of people use pot to come down from other drugs which may be bad for one's cardiovascular system.

I must stop taking Risperidone, a drug I need for anxiety and other problems. It is causing me to shake. I know this is about pot, but there are so many other substances that harm older people. I will be drastically cutting down on thc as well. I don't like panic attacks, but I've found there are worse things, like drug abuse and I fear I've been forgetting I'm old when I use such substancess. I AM OLD. Have to stop, slow down as it is hurting my life's quality.

Sorry for the corn, but Today is the First Day of the Rest of My Life.
I can do better. I will do better. I must do better. Before it's too late.

Pepper, severe anxiety is horrible and can be debilitating. I’ve had it at times and it’s truly awful. I totally understand why people self medicate with substances. I agree with you that the older we get the less our bodies are able to handle medications, etc.. Much of aging truly sucks.

As more and more older people are associated with marijuana of course it's gonna be slammed now. Next Time magazine will have an article about all the old people dying from pot.

These younger professionals just don't like the idea of Grandma and Grandpa sitting around getting high.

Exactly 👍 Plus people tend to believe everything they read that's scares them or even seems dangerous.
