I often use tongs.
After I use mitts to take food out of the oven, I use them to pick up hot foods.
I use them to take bread and foods out of my toaster too.
The now 12yr-old kid who comes over a couple times a month for baking lessons had no idea what oven mitts were called. He came over to borrow them one day and called them "those things you put over your hands to take the hot things out of the stove."
Those of you using towels, be careful the end doesn't catch on fire. (Been there done that.)
I use a silicone potholder to stand my left foot on if I'm going to be working in one spot for a while. After breaking the left leg, it's tiny bit shorter than the other one and it also seems to want to slide to the left in it's sock foot. The potholder stops all that.
