Pot smell is proliferating in cars. Here's how some car dealers are working to get the weed odor out

DETROIT — At Matick Chevrolet in Redford Township, the loaner car coordinator's toughest job isn't keeping track of the 244 loaner cars in its fleet, but rather explaining the no-smoking policy to some customers.

The policy forbids smoking of any kind in the loaner cars. That means tobacco, vaping and pot, the latter of which is becoming more common and is a big problem to eradicate.

The car rental agency can tack on a "odor eradicator" fee, to clean up the cars. One of the things we learned about the Prohibition Era was that people were going to indulge what got then high, whether anyone liked it or not. The concept of making some substances illegal, and criminalizing its use, and production just doesn't work. All you do is create profitable, and extremely vicious criminal empires, plus total disregard for the law.. I believe you have to hold people accountable for what they do while intoxicated,. I believe the system we have developed with alcohol is the better approach for mind altering substances.

If I recall, we had the same problems with alcohol users and sellers during Prohibition. Shootings, bombings, police corruption, etc.. They straightened that out and now, people who can't even imagine a life without booze, fail to see a connection.

Can you do without your wine and beer at every occasion? Most won't admit to it but it would be a difficult life change. I imagine it's the same for other mind-altering chemicals for people who enjoy them. The whole purpose behind all of it is to, as the Shadow" used to say, "is the ability to cloud men's minds". No one I know has a glass of milk to unwind.

I remember the company cars and the salesmen who used them and smoked.

One of them was absolutely smelled so bad of tobacco that we couldn't use it.

But we had one young man working for us in the warehouse and he said he would get the smell out for us. He lived on a farm.

He piled the car with freshly cut grass and we left it in the sun.

When the grass turned to hay, we opened the doors and the smell was almost gone. We had to disenfect the air conditioning system and finally the odor of tobacco was gone. We then were able to shampoo the upholstery and seats so the car could be useable again.

I think now they use ozone generators to remove the smell of smoke.

Intoxicating substances while driving or in a car no good. That's part of the reason many states have no open container laws when it comes to alcohol. Then there is such a thing as stink pollution if not actual air pollution. I don't want to smell old cologne, soaps etc either.

It does amaze how many post smokers even if passenger there are in cars when driving. I''ll be out walking and frequently a car passes by and smell what they were doing. Ruined by steppin out for some fresh air.

Even though I quit smoking almost 10 years ago, my Ford F-150 still gives up a molecule or two of tobacco smell, once in a while.
I thought an F - 150 was their latest model. I know nothing about trucks but thought this was a new model. I saw a guy park a beautiful white one where I was walking our dogs and it looked brand new.

Maybe it's the cars' faults. Maybe they want to get loaded. I mean, cars are people too. Remember the show, My Mother the Car? Cat's have catnip....
