Preppers for disasters

I am reading a rather cosy apocalypse novel series, the first book is called 'Havoc in Wyoming - Caldwell's Homestead' by Millie Copper. It is about a family of 'preppers' as they seem to be called. I am quite enjoying this story as it will not be graphic or violent.

I must admit, I am English and living in the UK, I am really not at all prepared for any nuclear war or world collapse! Having gone through the covid pandemic I feel a bit more aware how bad things could get. But mainly I wouldn't even know where to start, I couldn't possibly survive if electricity, water and food suddenly stopped. I depend on the government to look after us all.

Is anyone here at all prepared for disaster, do you know people who are really well prepared?

Sort of. I own a small farm and could grow my food. There are deer, squirrel, rabbit and turkey here. Plenty of trees for wood heat and cooking. Flour, sugar, salt and cornmeal are bulk staples because I cook a lot, also beans and brown rice. I have power outages here due to ice storms that have lasted more than a week so I do know how to cope.

you're depending on the wrong people if you think the government will look after us.. they're gonna be looking after Numero Uno... certainly not us, in the case of Nuclear war..

If there was such a thing it would be better off being blasted at the nucleus of the explosion.. that to have to try and survive through possible injury..and potentially serious injury, and with no hospitals running.. no electricity, no fuel... all batteries are rendered useless by a nuclear explosion.. telephones won't work, water and crops will be poisoned ... looters will not only raid stores, and banks but if they think you have anything they don't you will not stop them raiding your home..

..however if you were talking about massive shortages caused by say..a natural disaster, yes I'm pretty prepared. There are of course Manic Preppers out there.. who have everything stored in case of any emergency, many YOUTUBE vids out there showing their stash of everything from tons of food to tens and generators..

I have a good stock of food.. both frozen, canned and dried.

I have solar lighting.. and solar torches.. I have dry kindling to make a fire.. .. I keep saying I should get a small generator..

You really are in a good position, probably more than most.
Yet so many are in cities and towns, it is difficult to see how we could possibly cope. We cannot foresee much.
During covid I learned to stock better, but that's all.

Surely the government of each country would wish their citizens to survive. What is accomplished by us all perishing? I do think and hope we would be helped.

Same here. Meat and veggies can be canned for winter, I could also build a small smoke house to preserve meat, nothing fancy but useable. There is a natural spring not far from me for water, and a river just down below my cabin. The river would provide fish also.

well yes they might want them to survive.. but at what cost ?.. they're only humans like the rest of us.. they'll be looking after themselves.. there will be no medical help worth anything, places will be destoryed, there will be little or no food, crops will be destroyed or poisoned, what do you think the government could do for anyone other than themselves ?

This is an interesting topic. I'm not a prepper. I'm just prepared for a blizzard, roads closed, electricity out, for a week or maybe two.

I agree hollydolly. The government would be helpless to help so many even if they wanted to. The government would help itself and the other elite.

There are solar generators now. I've thought of buying a small one but I'm not sure if they are effective.

It was part of my culture when I was an active 'mormon', I also watched 'Preppers' on reality TV (that was a production of BYU grads). After many sleepless nights I decided the only thing I would rathole was toilet paper in massive bulk, could be traded for food or other supplies. Then lo and behold a prepper from Texas had the same idea. I decided that it was just delaying the inevitable. Go with the first, less stress! & you don't have worry about where to hide the bodies.

How is the government going to help if vehicles don't work, and everything is shut down? How are stores going to stay stocked? How are the people who work at those stores or in shipping going to get to work? How would food be transported at areas where its needed? How are medical facilities going to stay open? How are they going to get supplies? Banks closed, and even if you had millions of dollars if food wasn't available how are you going to get to it?

That's crazy! The people in power will protect themselves and their family. The gain for them is self-preservation...! The military will fight the resulting war and they will protect the person standing on their right and left shoulder, because that's what soldiers do.

I have my own self-protection ready to go, just in case! Having food and water is not enough if you cannot protect from others who will take from you if you cannot stop them...

Only the authorities can handle such a situation. We as citizens simply cannot.
Let's hope it never comes to that.

I must say, here in the UK we do not have weapons. I have no idea how we could deal with it.

that's what's been stopping me buying one tbh.. not knowing how effective thay are..I would only need a small one, but it could well sit unused for years before I need it, so I don't know how trustworthy they are to still work after years..or maybe after just one or 2 uses

well I have guns.. shooting is one of my hobbies.. altho' I haven't been since before Covid.. but I have them here , but even then they would only keep a few people at bay... .I'd really rather turn them on myself...

The aftermath of such an event might be similar to the "Walking Dead" tv show regarding how they got things and did things. They never ran out of guns though. That made me laugh.

We cannot predict what really might happen.

But, I know some people would be totally unprepared. Those are the people that will get desperate and try to take water and food from others. God forbid that we ever get to this level. But if we do, I am prepared to protect myself and my family from anyone trying to steal from us or hurt us in anyway.
