Prison officers have been ordered to stop calling criminals 'convicts' on the grounds it is 'offensive'.

Civil servants at the Prison Service headquarters have also instructed warders to drop the phrase 'ex-con' for former prisoners - and refer to them as 'persons with lived experience' or 'prison leavers'.

The edict has left staff shaking their heads – at a time when jails are suffering from record overcrowding and their colleagues are leaving in droves.

A Prison Service spokesman said it was part of a 'clampdown' on 'inappropriate deviations' from its guidelines.

The national chairman of the Prison Officers' Association (POA) trade union was instructed to drop use of the words in an official letter from the Ministry of Justice agency.

I agree @Gaer. What did they say all the time in the TV show Baretta, "Don't do the crime, if you can't do the time."
Same goes for the name that comes with it.

Not sure about anyone else, but I've had enough with the people who are NOT concerned over the victims of crime. Instead they focus on coddling & making excuses for those who commit them.

Sorry, got off topic & on a soap box.

No, I agree with you.. soapbox is needed, because you're absolutely right, and people shout it from the rooftops here too.. too much thought is given to the criminals and not the victims and it's about time it stopped!

I am constantly amazed at people who have time to think up this absurdity ........
In my opinion playing word salad with everything helps no one just makes all conversation or discussion mean nothing......

There must be a reason people put so much effort into playing rename everything in the world under the guise of civility or something being offensive. maybe a control thing to see how many will fall into line with things .......
It is a constant amazement the lengths people go to be offended ...........

This stuff can get out of hand. Like calling people 'unhoused' vs. 'homeless' And I heard a new one on the radio today I can't think of.

All that does is make whoever said it feel good and does nothing to help the situation. If I'm ever homeless, I don't care what you call me, as long as I can find help.

I agree. The only way is to not play with these people. They love the argument. I get one of them and I'm just going to tell them they sound like my mother in one of her abusive crazy states.

I feel if you're a convicted criminal you have by default given up the right to be offended by anything...
Maybe so, but I do think if we want to rehabilitate it would be best to treat them with respect and try to instill some feeling of self worth in them. Things like education, training, counseling, and keeping them from harm come to mind.

In my opinion not calling them what they are accomplishes little. Its just silly...

More politically correct nonesense about not offending criminals. Wonder how long they would keep talking this garbage if they got a knife in their ribs or were hit over the head with a steel pipe?

Yap! Everyone is offended about everything. It's another one of those First World "problems." Like I said before, we really need a war! What ever happened to common sense?

Things are really getting out of hand when it comes to "being sensitive to others' feelings!"
Disgusted and feeling I am being left behind!
