Pros and cons of a pre-paid phone

We did it. We bought a cellphone. Specifically a T-Mobile IPhone called Moto-G.

This started two weeks ago when a Spectrum Cable man came out to set us up with a bundle that included TV, internet and phone. After he left I discovered that:

The TV is now very hard to work, last night it took me exactly 25 minutes of clicking and searching so that I could watch a show on CBS. The new remote has no numbers, it goes like this; turn on, click home icon, click spectrum, click guide, tab down the guide until you find the station you want out of about 100 stations. I hate it.

The internet is the same, thank God.

The phones, all three landlines, had no dial tone at all. I called Spectrum and they said sorry they would send someone to come out five days latter. I said never mind I would go back to ATT. I called ATT and they said the spectrum guy had cut the lines and taken our number and they didn't want us back. I called the spectrum people back and they said they had disconnected us and didn't want us back. Landlines are being phased out so this was a nice opportunity to lose us. Probably on purpose.

So we went to T-Mobile and asked for the simplest pre-paid flip phone they had, they didn't have anything like that so we went to Verizon and they sent us to Walmart. Walmart didn't have anything like that either so we bought this Moto-G number from them. It cost around sixty dollars and the plan is about fifty a month and there were set up fees and taxes.

We had to stand in front of the gum chewing clerk for one hour and 45 minutes while she "set it up." Four times during that period my husband said it was our first phone and she would have to show us how to make calls. She never did.

We brought the thing home and found there were no instructions in the box. We went online looking for tutorials but they were all about how to take pictures and use various "apps," oh how I hate that word. I tried sites set up for children using phones but they were all geared for safety from pedophiles.

I punched every inch of the thing with my finger and nothing happened. My son came home and showed me how to swipe the front to make options come up. I have to swipe really hard several times to get any results, it may be because I have smooth fingers with no fingerprints. I finally got the option icons to show and one is a phone receiver, so I pressed on it but nothing happens.

My husband managed to make one call to the place where he volunteers.

We've had this phone four days and I still can't use it. Yesterday, I went to all the little shady looking phone stores in town and none of them had flip phones, burners, or pre-paids. I think they've been phased out because you can't lock people in for a lifetime of indebtedness.

I haven't really slept for 2 weeks now.

I'm not asking for help, I'm too mad to listen, I just wanted to rant and
warn Deb not to do it.

Ironic note: My husband has a Bachelor of Science degree in computers and during his 22 years in the air force he worked in communications.

I've had an android moto g phone for 2 years, and have had a positive experience. I'm sorry that yours has been different, and I feel your frustration. You said you're not asking for help, and that would be next to impossible to give by typing instructions over a forum anyway. But I would go back to the Walmart where you got it and ask the manager of that department to help me with this problem because Walmart allows you to return electronics within the first 2 weeks after date of purchase, I believe it is.

Thanks Mack! You've already been helpful. Several times I've been asked if my phone was an android and I didn't know. Now I do!

I bought an unlocked Moto G Power from Amazon a few years back. I was using an AT&T Prepaid account, so they needed to give me a new SIM card since the new phone uses a smaller size.

Later I went to Mint Mobile and they sent me a new SIM. I paid $20/month one year in advance ($240 for the year) and this gives me data that I hadn't had on the old AT&T plan as well as more generally "unlimited" talk and text.

I may step down to less data when I renew, so $15/month when paid a year in advance.

The last time a Spectrum tech was here to service my box (no snide remarks, now), he replace the receiver with the same kind, but he did mention that they are phasing out the traditional cable boxes. From now on if a receiver needs to be replaced, it will be Xumo. I have no idea what that is or if I can get the same channels I am now comfortable with.

That's what he did to our TV's, Deb. He removed the cable boxes on two TV's replacing them with Xumo's tiny boxes. As far as we can tell the Xumos will let us get several things we already get on the internet like You-tube and Tubi and it has lots of sports like a darts channel (seriously) and lots of things for children, like games. The tech told me my grandchildren would love it. Right. I don't have any grandchildren, either.

One TV, we found out, is a "smart TV' and basically it streams stuff from the internet, but at least I can get major networks on it like CBS, it just takes a while. What we can't ever do now is just pick-up the remote and flip through the channels till we see something interesting. If it were just me I would cancel all of Spectrum except the internet and throw the TV's out. I already watch things on the computer far more than any TV screen.

Without the TV's you and I would have more room for knick knacks, Deb!
