I knew that DH when he was the President of The Chicago Chess Club had hosted
Susan Polgar's visit to Chicago when she was 14/15. She was 2nd in the Women's Chess class of the
world at that time. Her sister Judit was 1st place, the one the movie is about.
He wanted to watch that movie today and so off handedly he says , Her Mother was so very sweet,
she and Susan stayed at my house during their visit.
I turned and looked at him. So surprised he never went too much into detail about that visit other
than he had taken them to the Jewelry District of Chicago and when they saw all the gold chains and
necklaces' on the walls they we awe struck.
He had no idea of their life and how they began to learn Chess, just that they were from Hungary.
This movie made him appreciate more he said of how respectful, gracious and grateful they were
of his hosting them. He had the top Hungarian restaurant in Chicago at the time set up a dinner
party for the Officers of the Chess Club and his guests. He said the owner was so thrilled to have Susan come,
he and his wife prepared the meal themself so Susan and her Mother could have a good home cooked meal.
Now I want to pry his brain to see what other people he met and has stories about. All these years
he didn't think it was an important enough tale to tell as many have no idea who Grandmasters
or Chess Champions are except Bobby Fischer.
I don't play Chess, but the history of this family having 3 daughters as world class chess players is
fascinating.
