Question about pet sitting

Are you a pet sitter? Or have you ever hired someone to pet sit for your precious babies?

I had pet sat for a couples 2 ferrets on their home for a week. Didn't have to stay at their home, just take care of their needs and play with them for a bit. They sure are interesting critters!

Over the years I've taken care of cats, dogs, turkeys, chickens, ducks, pigeons, cockatiels, rabbits, horses & goats.

I would have loved to be able to take care of ferrets ... I go to the local pet store to get my ferret fix. I know my cats would get along with them, but adding ferrets to 4 cats & 1 Schnauzer would get me kicked out of the house & into the barn.

My neighbors takes care of the horses, cats & dogs. A few times, I've taken the dogs to their favorite kennel (never looks our way when dropped off) for longer periods to make it easier on the neighbors.

Oh yes! We are grandparents (?) to a very silly, spoiled mini dachshund. He comes to our house when his people come into town. Sometimes he stays for a week but mostly for the day. His name is Sully.

For someone who cares and has the facilities to pet sit for strangers, this is a good opportunity to make some extra cash.

In the past we have had very good and very bad pet sitters.

We have had neighbours look in and feed our two babies(cats) when many years ago, we would actually take a vacation.

Our dog groomer babysits our dogs, when we travel.

My best friend who lives in Canbera , is putting her little dog into a pet sitting business over Christmas so she can spend a couple of weeks in Queensland with her daughter and family
It’s costing her $60 board $ 10 extra ….to brush her dog ( for 5 mins ) The dog is a cavodoodle so she has long fur ….$10 extra to be let run out of the pen for 5 mins = $70 a day

She asked us if we would come over if she paid our flights , but we are going to QLD for 4 weeks

A friend left her little dog with me when she went away for a few weeks. It was fine. We all knew each other, my dog and hers got along well.

I hired the neighbor's 19 year old daughter to pet/house sit last year for a few days when I visited my daughter in another state. I know the family and was comfortable with that.

Good for you! Mini-Dachshunds are notoriously hard to baby-sit or re-home. Rescues say they sometimes won't go with new owners, the dogs insist on "waiting" for their people to come and get them.

I left my first one at a vet's kennel for one night and was told, "never again" she hadn't stopped whining for one second. So I didn't try that again, but with my second one I thought I could take a short vacation since my son, who lives with us, was here to take care of her in her own home. After two days he said she wasn't eating, we came straight home, it was three days total and she was almost catatonic, it took me about ten minutes to get her to come out of it and realize I was home so she could eat and come back to life.

I did house- and pet- sitting many years ago in NY. Had its plusses and negatives, like most stuff.

I did it as a favor for family and friends a few times but quickly realized that it was a stressful and thankless job best left to professionals.

Family pets are so important to people that if anything, however small, goes wrong it can impact your relationship for a lifetime.
