Question about reading/distance prescription glasses

Hub had a pair and never got another one. When I ask him why he said they took too long to readjust when going in or out of a building in the sunlight.

I have two pairs of glasses. Sunglasses work pretty well either way so why fix it if its not broke...just don't get too dark a pair when ordering. Mine are "rose colored". Always wanted to go through life wearing rose colored glasses...lol.
Thanks Liberty...I have heard several complaints about the adjustment so I am leaning away from ordering them

I've had them for about 30 years ago. When I first got them they were made of glass & they got really dark but again when you came inside it took about 2 minutes to get back clear. Years passed & My Eye Dr's place that makes the glasses said we can't get glass anymore so we have to go with the plastic Photo gray.

So my first pair was really different as they did not get as dark as the old glass ones. In time they have improved & the last pair a year ago gets almost as dark as the glass ones. Also, change back to clear in about 30 seconds when coming inside.

One thing if you do a lot of driving the windshield tint will stop the glasses from turning so it's like no darkness at all. I keep a pair of slip-over sunglasses in the car to use on sunny days. Much better than $$$ expensive prescription sunglasses. I tried them once. Next year my script changed & the sunglasses was no good. That's why I use the slip-over ones now.
going for the widest..good gerief who knew there were so many decisions!!!
One other thing is to ask for your bifocal numbers (if your glasses have bifocals). Then I go to W Mart, CVS any other store that has cheap glasses & I get a pair with that prescription on it there. $10.00 is much better than $200.00 for a pair from the opthomoligest place. Use those for your computer glasses.
Thanks Tom....I have a price from my optometrist but I think I will go to Pearle Vision for another estimate and check out their prices and styles.
Do you have the progressives for your bifocals..i.e. .lens without the line? That is another feature I am thinking about and forgot to ask in
OP.. also about the channels...I think I am going with the widest...good grief I had no idea this was so complicated! lol

I think you will be happy with the improvement you will have, in your vision and your comfort, from having the correct script for each eye, by getting someone decent to prescribe them for you.

I am like you. I remind myself (very often!) that I am grateful for what I can manage to have.

Myself, I truly think it would be a nuisance to not be able to change glasses right away, when I need them light or dark. Especially in safety situations, including driving. But some people do love those transitioning ones.
Thanks Kaila..I think I am the instant gratification type..lol I want things when I want them and no delays :)

When we are older we need to look after our eyes . In Canada we call them transitions, I've worn them for years and takes no time at all to clear once indoors. they come in various shades of dark. Together with progressives they make for the perfect fit. Progressives come with two prices, if you buy the cheaper lenses your vision might be slightly distorted.
Thanks Robin..are the progressives features you are referencing also called channels because I was offered 3..from rather inexpensive to more for medium then premium ..was told the premium helps see a wider vision ...hard to explain

I tried and did not like them. One unanticipated problem I had was seeing my iphone on a bright day. Hard enough with untinted lenses.

I ended up buying one set of prescription sunglasses and one regular. Much happier.

You could be different, who knows.
Thanks Rob...I may get 2 pair but will first try to put my oversized sunglasses over the prescription and see if that works if I do not get the transitions..I keep an oversized pair in my car and another in my house...

I tried that to, and it works fine for most things. However I found that for more strenuous outdoor activities, like fishing in rough waters, I wanted the second polarized pair. I still used the oversized ones sometimes.

Ask them to show you a diagram for want of a better word. I am visual so it was easier for me to understand, because as you said, it is very hard to explain. Companies issue charts for prices along with pictures that show the lines of vision.
Channels? sorry I do not know what that is. Isn't that silly, two english speaking countries who are neighbours yet the language is not the same. All my previous progressives have been the more expensive, this time I opted for a cheaper version and yes I do notice a slight difference but it does not bother me. Good luck , shopping for glasses is not easy, IMO.

Thank you Robin...She hand drew the lens visibility areas and the most expensive of course :) has the widest view. I will probably go with that though and maybe in a few years when I get another prescription I will choose differently..wonder how long I can go with my current prescription

wonder how long I can go with my current prescription

The places are only legally supposed to be able to fill an eyeglass script that is less than a year old. I don't know if some might want one that is any more recent than that, such as within 6 months, or if they all go with the year, then it expires.

But you might have meant, how long will it be till your eyes might need different lens scripts. That would depend on what your eyes do, which cannot be predicted. Sometimes the same glasses are good for years, but sometimes our eyes change much sooner than that.

Make sure you ask at the place you get your glasses from if there is a return policy because the Progressive ones with no bifocal line don't work.
I got set years back, Made me so sick as my Eye Optometrist said your eye is always "trying" to find the right place to look through so it's constantly moving. She said there are a lot of people that can't wear the no-line glasses, they have to go to the lined bifocal & which solves their problem.

I was lucky as I got my glasses from "EyeGlass World" I told them about making me sick & they made me a new set of glasses with the lined bifocal & my sickness went away. So now I always get lined bifocals. They are really easy to get used to.

Yes, I was going to post about this. Some of us have too much difficulty with the blurred area, and I was told they could actually be dangerous for those like me, who already have difficulty navigating stairs and other ground surfaces, or who ever get dizzy, or have the potential for falling, etc.

I far prefer them with lines, that are very clear and specific locations, and I have had both bifocals and even trifocals at times.

ANd yes, some places if you tell them beforehand, that you've never had them before and would like the gradual ones without the lines,
but ASK if you have too much trouble with them, then would they replace free of charge.
Some places want to sell to you, so they do, and would say yes,
But many would say no, and they do not, of course.
It's best to know before you buy, whether you are risking that or not!

Thank you Tom...I have wondered about the no line lens and assumed the no line was an advance in technology..so I will ask about the guarantee TY

I think the no-line, is just that they grind it off, so it is not seen by other people who look at you.
A cosmetic choice that is important to some wearers, not as any vision help for the person wearing them, other than personal privacy/vanity.

But perhaps they have now developed some other type of no-line bifocal, since I last checked on it, myself.
I myself don't care about the vanity issue, or what anyone else thinks about my wearing bifocals, if they ever even notice.
But if that does upset you, the wearer, Or if you just prefer the look of no-line, or think you would like it for any reason,
then it's fine and important for to check into it.

Kaila:
No, the no-line bifocal is a script that when you look through the top you're looking through the script for distance viewing. Then as you move your eye down some it "GRADUALLY" changes to your reading glasses. So you are constantly;y moving your eyes or head to "try" to find the correct place to look through.

I know I tried a pair & I hated them I was always trying to find the right place to look, glad Eyeglass World took them back & made me a new pair but with bifocal lines at no charge.

OH, okay, THANK YOU, for explaining that, to me too, Tom! :)

Wow, I am sure I made the correct decision for myself, but I can understand better, now, why someone else might want to try those.

I had trifocals with lines, instead of those no-lines, for some years, and found them easy to get used to,
and my bifocals also, always have had lines, and they are definitely best for me.

What's most important to me, myself, is to see better whatever I am possibly able to see, with the help of glasses, and to not have the glasses make me feel sick or fall, any more or easier than I do.

Thanks again, Tom. That's a great explanation!
And,
I am glad they replaced the glasses for you! I did go to a place, that did that for me, when/if I could not see as hoped, or could not adjust to the ones they filled.
But many places will not do that.

Kaila:
I had trifocals for many years. Then I got a new eye Dr. & she checked my glasses then did a good eye test on me. She said you DON'T need trifocals you just need bifocals made a special way with my prescription.

I got them & sure were great, didn't take any time to get used to them. So I go to her every year & she tells me if I need a change or not. I know I got to go see her in January, as my Retina Dr. puts the shot in my right eye when his nurse gave me the eye test I could see three lines smaller when I put the little holes over the big hole. So they said I need to see Dr. P & get new glasses. I've never got a better vision when looking through those little holes.
