Question about Windows 11 and Upgrade

For anyone more tech-savvy than I (most of SF, I think) -- I have a Windows 10 desktop which "will no longer be supported" after October. It can't be upgraded.

Is this a big deal? Do I need to buy a new computer? Or can I just get by without support? I don't get much support anyway.

Inquiring minds want to know.

google says this:

Will my Windows 10 computer stop working?

No. Support for Windows 10 is discontinued, but the software will continue to function. However, after October 14, 2025, your computer running Windows 10 will no longer receive security updates. In addition, Microsoft customer service will no longer be available to provide Windows 10 technical support.

If you use a strong anti-virus like Norton, and do not click on links sent from anywhere and do not visit questionable websites, it will work for years. Go to websites that you want to visit, intentionally. Besides having backups of any files that are important to you, it is not a bad idea to acquire a second computer if you have the funds from a recycler either locally or online that already has Windows 11. Joy Systems is one good source.

I bought the fastest and most powerful computer that I have ever owned a couple of weeks ago for $330, and I have spent my entire career with computers. Local recyclers are the best option ... they get computers for free and the ones that are not broken or need minor repairs become available at prices better than any store. Some governments and charities give away computers for free for low income households. Just relaying some information, not trying to convince anyone.

I don't want to give you a definitive response.

I'm on Windows 10. Microsoft says it can't upgrade to Windows 11. And you know what? That's fine by me. Operating Systems are there to support the tasks I want to do. Windows 10 does that.

The downside is that we will reach a point where updates won't be available (unless we pay). Well, I won't be paying. I'll go without the updates. As long as the PC does what I want it too, I'm good.

Of course, there are rumors that eventually, Microsoft will be forced to back down on it's requirements. We'll see. But in the mean time, I have no interest in upgrading something that works.

Recently, I have had considerable problems with Windows 10 such as not being able to load my emails, so I have to wonder whether is truly an accident?

That sounds like a very simple thing... but I'm sure it's not. Natively, Windows 10 supports all the major email protocols. So if you can't "load" your emails, then the problem is elsewhere, not with Windows itself. Still, it depends how you're trying to load them. Via web? Via app? Do you get an error message?
