Around here in my parts, the big argument was who was the better middle linebacker—Butkus or Lambert? Being a Steeler fan, I always chose Lambert. I remember when Jack Lambert was named as the best MLB of his era during a sports award banquet. I was at the banquet in New York the night he was given that title.

I went to several award banquets for players from the 60’s and 70’s. They all had some great stories. Artie Donovan of the then Baltimore Colts had the best stories. He could make me life until I cried.

RIP, Dick Butkus.

It was interesting that altho Butkus and Sayers were teammates, they were never close to one another until a while after they retired. They became best friends, and if you ever watch the Sayers episode of the wonderful NFL documentary series "A Football Life", Sayers and Butkus both sit in on the live interview part, side by side.
