Ragged jeans and shorts

I see a lot of people in the teen to thirties range wearing jeans or shorts that have ragged cuts in them. If they were mine I would put them immediately in the garbage. What I don't understand is why anyone would want to look like a rag picker from a third world landfill.

I think the more outlandish they can look the better they like it. Maybe some kind of attention getting thing although I can think of a million different ways to get it than resorting to that. I see them in the stores dressed like that which they accessorized with purple hair, earrings in the nose, and tongue. Disgusting.

I see it as a kind of artistic texture -- I like the frayed clothing. People like to express their creative side maybe? As long as clothes are clean what does it matter anyway?

In the end, providing my nose is not insulted, fashion is only fashion. I love to experiment, wear Sikh outfits regularly, get mehndi (sp?) done on my hands by the Muslim lady at the farmer's market. Next thing, I wanna try? Hair chalk. What bright colour goes good with red hair and brown eyes. Can't wear mauve, makes me look dug up.

I still wear cut off jeans with fringe along the cut off edges. I love em. They're so comfortable. Especially after about 100 or so washing. I started doing it way back when I was in my teens. Back then I paired them up with one of my dad's white shirts. Now I usually just throw on a t-shirt. Somehow it's just freeing when I wear them. Its hard to explain.

You are right Shalimar, fashion is only fashion. I guess it kind of shocks me.You have to remember this is coming from a person who hasn't worn lipstick in years. lol

These frayed and distressed fashions are not for us over 60s or even over 50s. They look fine on the pritty young things though. If I had frayed jeans, which I don't, I'd keep it very subtle, maybe just a touch here and there, with a white t-shirt and a few colorful bangles. In my day, we patched our ripped jeans with embroidery and interesting stitching.

Where I live in the Capitol Hill area of Denver...it is called an 'eclectic area'....which means you see just about everything.;) But I enjoy it... As long as people aren't hurting each other...why should they dress to please ME?

I don't care for the ragged cuts in jeans, and wouldn't buy them new that way that's for sure, but I see a lot of people around wearing them, doesn't bother me. Back in the 60s lots of us had jeans or shorts with a few holes or frayed edges/bottoms, but they got worn out that way, it wasn't a fashion statement. I had cut down a pair of my jeans years ago, and the bottom edge naturally frayed, they were comfortable and I didn't think twice about them. Way back in the day when we were kids, our parents were saying the same things about bell bottoms, jeans, and other things we wore.

I think it's today's way of slumming. Back in the '60s there was a fad for wearing cutoffs -- you cut off the legs of jeans above the knee but you rolled them up a couple of times to make a cuff. The shredded-jeans look has been around for at least 20 years -- some students wore them at the university I worked at back then and those kids were not poor!

The piercings and tattoos are weird to me and ugly but that's just me -- I guess it's a matter of "beauty is in the eye of the wearer." I kinda like the wild hair colors.

I would say teals and other blue-greens to go with red hair and brown eyes; also russets and golds, but why not a more vibrant purple than mauve? If you're going for contrast. Maybe a warm royal purple? Periwinkle is good too.

Is it OK to wear Sikh clothes if you're not a Sikh? Maybe you are. But is it cool if you're not?

Unless I find it offensive.........I really don't want to see strangers bottoms and boobs when I'm walking down the street........I really don't care what anyone wears. As long as they're clean they can wear what they like as long as it's appropriate..........wouldn't want my GP wearing her swimmers or my dentist in his jammies.

Guitarist, excellent colour choices for my next hair experiment! It is cool to wear Sikh outfits even if I am not Sikh. I have been complimented many times by members of our South Asian community. In a sense, it is a way of building bridges.

You know what is pretty? Really dark hair with blue or purple highlights. I'm old and very fair so it just looks a bit...I don't know. But if you can rock it...even pink.

Put short cut, ragged,'Daisy Dukes' or jeans with holes in them, here and there, on a good figured younger gal to me is hot........but it's all about having the age and figure to pull it off correctly.

Its a style thing. The ripped and frayed jeans are bought that way and cost a pretty penny. For DIY girls go to a lot of trouble to get the cuts and frays just right.

I had a friend who made quite a nice amount of money by buying cheap new or used jeans, washing them with a lot of bleach and then taking them out and shooting them with a shotgun full of buckshot. Sometimes she'd fray spots on them with a belt sander. She sewed a personalized label in the back and sold them through a friend's boutique for an ungodly amount of money. The girls were snapping them up.

I wore my share of ridiculous fashions back in the 1960's.....I'm not about to criticize anybody else's taste. I actually turned a pair of "elephant bell" jeans into maternity jeans and wore them with a huge peasant shirt. My husband's Commanding Officer told him to "make your wife stop dressing like a goddam hippie on my base!" I stopped.
