Ramadan is a month of fasting observed by all Muslims in every country. During this month all adult Muslims abstain from eating and drinking from sunup to sunset unless there is a medical reason that they should not. They rise before the sun to eat breakfast and after sundown they gather for a family meal known as the Iftar meal.
I have been given the opportunity this year to be a guest at an Iftar meal in the home of a Turkish couple and their two little boys. This has come about because our minister has links with the Muslim community in Sydney through an organisation named Affinity. Our minister, myself and another woman from our congregation will be guests tomorrow night.
I am looking forward to this cross cultural event and today I bought a gift plate of mixed baklava as a gift for the hosts. I also have a gift for the 8 and 4 year old boys. It is a lego style marble race that is similar to one that my grandchildren loved to assemble and play with thirty years ago.
Last year Ramadan in Australia was very constrained, as were the Christian festivals, because of COVID 19. It is a relief that this year we have reached the point where people are confident enough to welcome strangers into their home. Hospitality is integral to all religions and is the pathway to peace.
Ramadan Mubarak to all
