One of Merlin’s stories reminded me of something that happened a long time ago in the small town where I went to high school. This is long, but some might find it interesting.

In high school I knew a girl I’m going to call "Debbie". She was very pretty, smart, popular, and a cheerleader. I remember being on the hs newspaper staff and my first assignment was to interview the cheerleaders and write an article. Afterwards, when I saw Debbie we sometimes chatted, although we weren’t close friends.

Fast forward about 10 yrs (early 1970s)…..one day after work I went into a department store and I was looking for bed linen. A saleswoman came to help me, and I noticed her namebadge. Turned out to be Debbie’s mother – also very attractive and friendly, at the time in her mid 40s. We had a pleasant chat about Debbie and life in general, etc.

A few days later the town was rocking with a shocking, tragic news story:
Debbie’s mother (who was married) had been having an affair for several years with a married CEO of a company in town. Her lover’s wife had come to the home of her husband’s mistress/girlfriend to “have a talk”, and then pulled out a gun and shot Debbie’s mother. I remember telling my mother I had just seen the woman!

(A few month’s later I got another job and moved to a different city.) Later there was a trial – my mother sent me newspaper articles – the wife was found guilty of premeditated murder and sent to prison. As I recall, she actually only served about 8 years.

I later found out that Debbie had moved to another state, and had a successful interior design firm. I did see her at a class reunion, met her husband, etc. She looked fantastic – but for a moment I could not help thinking about what had happened.

The movie “Presumed Innocent” (1990) with Harrison Ford (based on a novel by Scott Turow) always reminded me of the incident. (When a spouse goes to “have a talk” with their mate’s lover, it usually does not end well…….)

Anyone else have a story to share?

I just heard day before yesterday that the local OB/GYN here in town got caught by the husband of a woman with whom he was having an affair and got beat up pretty badly. She was a patient of his,as was his current wife when he was married before. He is two of my daughters and my daughter in laws doctor but thankfully was only around to deliver one of my grandkids. Probably was "busy" elsewhere on those days. He gives me the creeps.

Sorry-this has nothing to do with what you were asking but your story reminded me of it...

Just dawned on me that he is who my granddaughter in law is seeing and (if he`s around) will be delivering my greatgrandson in July. I really don`t plan on being at the hospital-first time I will not witness the birth of a grandchild-but her mom is such a nutcase and HATES doctors so I just know there will be a brouhaha occurring. Not my cup of tea....

No problem, Mrs. R. Interesting story.

(I just thought of another one, but has nothing to do with affairs...will post later.)

About 15 yrs ago I worked at a commercial real estate firm. They had an attorney on staff who also headed up his own property management section. Nice enough guy, mid 40s at the time, and he also employed his sister and brother. I didn’t do any work for him but knew him enough to talk to in passing. He was a very dapper guy, and there was some talk about him being from a wealthy family.....lived the good life.....luxury homes and cars, private schools for kids, expensive vacations, private plane, etc.

A few years after I left there was a big story on the news about the water being turned off for non-payment at the apartment communities he owned, and there was also a report about suspected embezzlement, money laundering, and forgery.

The upshot is that there was a long, complicated trial 5 yrs ago and he is now sitting in prison (he got 8 yrs, has served a little over 4 so far).

Interesting AC. That reminds me of something that happened in the late 70s.

I was doing freelance editing in Vancouver for an American guy named Bill Green who was writing a book called "How to Not Pay Your Taxes." He was very smug and know-it-all about everything. It included information on getting tax breaks by starting a church, and other ways to fool the IRS I can hardly remember.

I finished working for him and then went on a long trip overseas. While I was away, I read in the local paper that a Bill Green was in prison in the U.S. for tax evasion. I laughed because it could only have been the same fellow I had worked for.

Seems so. Or the reverse, write the book then cheat. He had other books like that out too. I'm trying to find them online.

I am always amazed at what people think they can get away with. Hubby runs a body shop here in our small town. Only one real competitor. Two owners. One owner was one of my oldest grandson`s football coaches, the other lives right down the road from us and we know him pretty well. When we sold our body shop 5 years ago, hubby brought all the paint we had in stock and gave it to these guys. This was before hubby went to work where he works now. Anyway, grandson wrecked his car and had it fixed at these guys` shopand when he got it back, hubby went over it. They totally ripped grandson off-didn`t do many of the things they had charged the insurance company for. Grandson wouldn`t report them because it had been his coach. Then, about a year and a half ago, hubby (now working in a body shop up the street from them) starts hearing that the Bureau of Automotive Repair is making a case against them for insurance fraud. A month or so later, the "coach" shot himself in his office at 6am-"accidentally,while cleaning his gun." He spend many, many months in the hospital with a shattered liver. His liver was not in the greatest shape anyway as he is a very, very heavy drinker. He did survive though and has been back at work for about 6 months. Then two weeks ago, both he and the other owner showed up on the arrest logs, charged with insurance fraud. They both posted bail and are out now but had a court date day before yesterday. Hubby ran into the younger guy in the store today and said he said hi but didn`t look happy. He always waves when we drive by his house and has continued to do so since he was arrested but he must be pretty embarrassed, knowing hubby has to know what has happened.

Mrs R, re: the shooting 'accident', do you think he was trying to commit suicide?

(btw re: the story I told about the ex-atty in prison now for embezzlement, etc.....when they were conducting the investigation there was a piece in the paper stating US Marshals showed up at his house (in expensive suburb) and searched/confiscated various things - just like in the movies. Imagine.......I'm sure the neighbors got a show that day.)

Back in the late 1950's, my parents had a small cottage on our property that they rented out. One year, they rented it to a man who had the same name as my father, except for the middle initial and almost the same age. The address, of course, was the same as ours; he just took his mail out of the mailbox. Seemed like a nice guy; rent always paid on time. Everything was fine until the cops showed up one day. Apparently Mr.-Same-Name-As-My-Dad had robbed a bank that morning and took off for parts unknown. There was no question that it wasn't my dad, but, of course, it was in all the newspapers that Mr. ________ ________, age 36, of _________ S. ________ was wanted for bank robbery.

Being that my father was an elder in our church, a scoutmaster, a Civil Defense officer and an altogether outstanding member of the community, this was a 3-day wonder. The newspaper, thank goodness, published a short notice a couple of days later about the similar names and stating that my dad was absolutely NOT the bank robber. My dad, being the prankster that he was, did dress up as a convict for several Halloweens after that.

jujube re:Halloween your dad sounds like a character.;)

I have a somewhat unusual last name, but years ago found out the hard way that another woman had the same first and last name as me. I was getting strange calls from creditors, etc. She had all kinds of problems. One night 3 different people called and told me to turn on the news....she was being arrested. We were total opposites in appearance, had different middle initial, and her last name was her married name.
