Reality shows. Does anyone "get" them?

What do you think about these reality shows of the past several years? I don't refer to the talent shows as they have a certain amount of entertainment value. I just can't understand the ones with couples-who gets kicked off the show or the island, what ever. Does anyone watch these shows? I think there is a certain amount of meanness or at the very least, insensitivity being shown though quite phony. I think these shows may be directed towards the younger set but does anyone here think they are entertaining? I just don't understand how they get good ratings. It seems like the networks have a lot of them. I wish they would soon run their course!

They're not my watching preference at all, and I don't get the appeal. I feel that networks and Hollywood in general struggles with finding original content, and someone had a great idea to try that avenue and it was hugely popular. But I've met people who cannot understand why I prefer other things instead, so it's all just a matter of preference in the end.

Some nights my daughter will pamper me and do my nails or massage my hurting parts. Reality junk is something we can laugh at together. In the old days they had sideshows, now we have reality TV.

I do not watch them. I used to watch Iron Chef, though, because it was interesting to watch them make fancy meals out of ingredients I had never even heard of; and Dancing with the Stars because I liked the dancing. But I don't watch any of those off the island or who's the biggest idiot ones.

Cooking and dancing have value. Entertainment such as the talent shows I can watch. It's the others I have trouble understanding what the attraction is.

Nope. Don't get them at all. The only ones I've seen promos for seem to feature people making up fake reasons to start arguments, and then yelling at each other. I'd rather watch professional wrestling (which I hate).

No I don't watch them because although they label it "reality" how can it be? It's totally staged. Just bring a camera crew into my personal space and see how quickly I start mugging for the camera. I've never understood the appeal of reality TV.

Normally I don't watch them... However, I am addicted to one. "Married at first sight". Each season three couples are matched by "experts" and married.. The first time they see each other is at the alter. The show gives them 6 weeks to be husband and wife and at the end of the six weeks they must decide if they want to stay married or get a divorce. It's interesting..

Honey Boo Boo is in a league of its own. I know that I am prudish, and I make no apologies for it. "Honey Boo Boo" and "Toddlers and Tiarras" border on pedophilia. Why on Gods green earth would you sexualize a child? So why take a blank slate and teach her that her value lies in her appearance and perceived sexual value?
Why are you continuing to teach her male counter parts that she is nothing more than an accessory to be used and discarded as he sees fit? So I guess that would be a no for me!

I have never watched more than a few minutes of the shows where you are voted on and off. I went to high School once, don't need to again.

I do enjoy watching show like "Gold Rush", "Swamp Loggers", and their ilk, which are idiotic in their own fashion. I mean who hauls millions of dolllars in equipment to South America, and not bring filters for the excavator.

I watch one every year it's called 'I'm a celebrity get me out of here' and based in an Australian Jungle setting, the reason I watch is the hosts, Ant and Dec are just hilarious and I know I'm in for a good laugh with every episode

Apparently there is one in the UK now called 'Naked Attraction' where six totally naked people are viewed (up to their necks) and one is chosen as a date, classy !

When they first came on I watched a few. I have read that so much of it is scripted. Even some of the cooking shows. There are a lot of new shows coming on for the fall. I'm sure 95% of them I won't even get through the first episode. Just give me my books and my old photo albums and the hubby can throw the TV out. Now that's reality.

The naked ones on every week
I've watched it once
proper pony it was not my cup of tea
dont watch the jungle to many has beens
on it on there because they've got no work
anywhere else

I do not care for them. When "The Bachelor" first came on years ago I watched a couple of episodes and decided it was very "demeaning" to women. My goodness, these beautiful women are on national TV making fools of their selves over this one guy. I always thought..."Why can't you find someone in real life..you are beautiful"?

There's no reality in "reality" shows. But then, would "reality" sell? I think not.

I mean, who wants to watch the "Jujube Show"? Nobody's naked, especially out in the wilderness in front of a camera crew. Nobody is getting married. Nobody is buying a house. Nobody is having a feud with her best friend. Nobody is pimping her 3-year-old daughter out at a kiddie beauty pageant. Nobody weighs 500 pounds, at least not yet (OK, who hid the Oreos????) Nobody is living in a house full of empty boxes and dead cats. Nobody is living in the swamp or the wilds of Alaska. It's really boring on the Jujube Show. Nobody wants to watch it, including me.

Robusta, I completely agree with you about the sexualization of children and the whole child pageant thing. Besides the obvious things wrong with the whole thing, seeing a child Jon-Benet Ramsey's age with all that makeup and prancing around the stage like a showgirl in suggestive poses is just plain creepy and disgusting. How any parent could see that that sort of thing is a good idea is completely beyond me.
