Received my driver's license application for renewal

In my state after age 70 you can only renew your license for 5 years instead of 8. You can take the vision test at the DMV or you can have both your regular doctor and your eye doctor fill out a form saying that you’re able to drive. Last year my birthday I just went to the DMV and passed the vision test.

If I needed a new glasses, I would definitely get them because not only would driving be a problem but a person could also fall because they don’t see something. It’s definitely not worth the risk to save a little bit of money. Luckily since I had cataract surgery, I only need glasses for reading.

For my entire life, whenever I have driven, I consciously think of other drivers as being beloved members of my family. Thus, I am a good driver because I don't want to kill or maim any loved ones. It's been a habit of mine for decades.

That attitude will also inform my decision of when to stop driving.

When I drove a Navigator, if there was a slow driver on the road (elderly), I'd get behind them to keep them safe from tailgaters. Where we lived, many drivers of huge pickups would tailgate people to force them to drive faster. My car was practically indestructible, so I didn't care, but they could have caused an elderly person to crash by intimidating them.

Imagine my surprise when I was being annoyed by a particular tailgater to realize that he was an off-duty cop, and was closely related to someone I knew. He didn't know me; he was just a jerk who lived close to me. He literally drove, on the highway, about 6" from my bumper. Every time I had to slow down to turn off onto my street, I kind of cringed in case he couldn't stop in time. The speed limit was 55 and I was going 60 until time to turn.
