Received town tax bill today

We have "Council Tax" here in the UK, which sorta amounts to the same thing. Bills of £1000 plus are common.

Is that for a year of six months? Even in California with the (what was it prop 13?) they still add local taxes to make it go up a bit.

Taking valuations into account I pay 3 times that for Winter taxes, Summer only about twice that.

But I do get some back on my income tax return as a Homestead Property Tax Credit.

But that's not the only tax bill on my property - there's water tax due in April and October, the village tax in June and school taxes in September.
Ok, that's different then.

Water is separate here though, but a lot of other stuff is piled onto our property taxes like county taxes, school taxes, airport taxes, library taxes, bus line taxes, parks taxes, conservation taxes, etc.

But that's not the only tax bill on my property - there's water tax due in April and October (totaled $347.20 last year), the village tax in June ($647 last year) and school taxes in September ($2544.33 last year). That's over $4300 in taxes in one year.
Taxes are one of the "joys" of living in NY. That State has the highest tax ratios in the nation....nearly 16% for the average......

State and Local Tax Burdens, Calendar Year 2022

I suppose a lot of factors go into tax rates, such as average income and/or net worth. If it is a state with a lot of poor people they wouldn't be able to pay a high rate. A state with a lot of middle-class and wealthier people can afford to charge higher taxes, and presumably people get more services.

Though when I was in Nebraska I was paying more than Deb for total taxes, and I didn't even get access to water, sewer, or even a paved road (OTOH, had 10 acres). I had to pay a thousand dollars just to get the phone company to put a high speed internet line down the road to my house. Plus that darn Nebraska taxes Social Security income (tho they were in the process of reducing that when I moved).

I own my condo. I get tax statements but its zero taxable. No rent based. Have never been billed for taxes Statements always say no taxes due.
Terry, do you have a monthly HOA fee. Some places around here have the general building taxes included in that and then they pay something for their own units. You’re lucky that Texas has tax benefits for seniors. We pay a fortune for our taxes and services. There is a partial deduction for seniors. I feel lucky that we have a home to pay taxes on.

We're supposed to bring the bill to the assessor's office to pay, but she has such limited hours. I don't like to drive after dark.

I would mail it in. It’s ridiculous for them to think that people are going to hand deliver it. Most places allow you to pay online.

Nevada has really cheap taxes because of the gambling revenue. They also have a formula where the age of the property is used to set the rate. So my house that I sold for 400k had property taxes of 700/year and it was 70 years old. My condo is worth slightly more than half that and is 45 years old. My taxes are 400/year.
