Red Yeast Rice

I just got back from my doctor appointment. Of course my cholesterol is high again, (380), but I explained that after quitting two prescriptions three months ago, I was feeling better, and my energy level was much better. I told the doctor I didn't want to start them back up.
My doctor said she wanted me to try Red Yeast Rice, 600 mgs twice a day. Has anyone ever tried this stuff? I'm just about willing to try anything to keep from going back on statins. :tapfoot:

I`ve heard of it but didn`t remember that is could lower cholesterol I can`t take the statins either so my doc wants me to try fish oil capsules. The Red Yeast Rice sounds much more appealing somehow...:)

I was surprised when the Dr. suggested the Red Yeast Rice supplement. I mentioned that I had never heard a doctor suggest anything except prescriptions. She said that she has been studying homeopathic medicine for almost five years. She told me that the Good Neighbor Clinic didn't encourage their doctors to prescribe homeopathic. But that when all other efforts proved not to work, she was allowed to suggest them only after clearly explaining that it wasn't normal medical practice.
So I think I might have lucked out with this doctor.

I never had a problem with high cholesterol, and the more I read, I wonder if cholesterol is as bad of a thing as we've been led to believe. I do take supplements though, like fish oil, vitamin E (D-Alpha),eat a lot of garlic in my diet, and sometimes use supplements like Lecithin, which is touted to be cholesterol's worst enemy. My husband had a slight elevation in his cholesterol years ago, but using these supplements have brought the numbers down.

I never used red yeast rice, but have heard of it. I know they say that whether you take prescription statins or red yeast, you should also be taking CoQ10 with it. Here's a short article that may be helpful...http://www.raysahelian.com/redyeastrice.html

Red Yeast Rice was one of the first supplements that worked for lowering Cholesterol it is safe and natural. The drug companies took the same chemical and duplicated it but it does not work as well.
Ina it seem you won with your doctor.

Thanks dOug, For me its worth trying, the other cholesterol meds made me so sick, I had no energy, and I now realize just how much of my depression was caused by them. Sea's link told me about using CoQ10 with the RYR, so I'll be calling the Dr. About using it too.
