Reflections of My Life

I have been making an effort to not be on the computer as much. If I am writing or working on my photos that does not count. Cutting down on social media including YT. Yesterday was the first day I actually left my computer chair and sat in the recliner with my feet up. For an hour or two while I colored. But the reason I did it is because Randy, the maintenance man was working on my overhead lights. I will try to do it again sometime today.

Three days in a row I walked my hall, 2 laps around it. Yesterday my knee hurt so bad I could not even attempt to do it. I will try again today. I don't do it first in the morning. I do it after my breakfast. It feels like the right time and I have more energy to walk. I want to get myself walking outside again as soon as the weather gets nicer. I have not been able to walk to my hair salon since November. I am thinking maybe by the time April rolls around I can call for an appointment.

It is important to me to maintain my own independence. I do not want to rely on anyone else for anything. Every time I do, I am disappointed. If I can get back my ability to walk (with the walker) to my foot doctor and the lymphedema therapist instead of needing a ride that would be great. If I can do that maybe I could walk to the YMCA. I have wanted to do that ever since I moved here. UHC will pay for a membership for me.

I got my new light yesterday and have it set up behind my chair here. It lights up my computer screen and keyboard really good. My eyes are not sensitive to the light either. In fact, they are feeling pretty good this morning.

People have been complaining constantly on my FB Scanner Nerds page about Norwich not having the bowling alley open. That there is nothing for kids to do in Norwich. So this morning a guy posted that he knows for a fact that a new bowling alley is in the works. And it might have roller skating too. Closer to downtown so it should be easy for kids to get to. Now the complainers were asking if there would be pool tables in it! The guy answered back that he didn't think so. Now there is a long bunch of comments complaining about that! Just goes to show you no matter what you do for people it is never enough.

Ask a church to organize a weekly dance for the kids? Including a competition?
Organize a miniature golf course?
Table Tennis?

I spent most of my day writing out my new budget sheet for March. I had done it a week ago but then decided to make some changes. Done now and I paid a good share of my bills. Tuesday is errand day and will get my rent taken care of. I don't need to buy anything I can think of this month except food. I feel good when I have everything taken care of.

My neighbor took my garbage out for me and I was glad to let her do it. I have not felt like walking that far. Even though this morning my knees did not hurt like usual. Not sure what I did different. Very sunny day but still cold....27 degrees. I still have to fill out my calendar for the month. I am behind on that.

Working on some other things little by little. Nothing too tiring though.

It is very cold this morning but the sun is shining so it should warm up a bit. There is always something going on here. Last night my friend who lives downstairs called me. She told me that one of the guy who lives here (who starts rumors all the time and she should know better than to listen to him) told her the fire code has been changed. And all our apartment doors are going to be changed to "swinging doors" like the ones in restaurants that go to the kitchen. I told her I didn't believe it.

I don't believe it because we would not be able to lock our doors. This is an apartment building not a nursing home or assisted living. Today she is going to call the fire department to ask them. I can't even imagine something like that. She said it for all apartments not just this building. I keep my door locked even when I am home so that would not make me happy.

kat,

She might be thinking about automatic door closers similar to this one.

They are part of the fire code here but they also cause a lot lockouts for people that don’t keep their keys with them.

Many people here pull the pin that attaches them to the door and disable them which kind of defeats the purpose.

What exactly is their purpose? I think I have seen those on doors before. Not here.

My friend called to tell me she did call the fire department. She talked to a fireman and he said there was no such rule on the fire code. He said our doors here are just fine the way they are. So it was a rumor.

Today is my errand day and I expect to get a lot done. I have to file that report for the lost money order at the post office. And get a new one for Jeff's deposit. After that when I get the money back from the post office for the lost one (which was not cashed) I can give that to him. I think I have to do it myself at the post office. Sonny usually goes in and gets the money orders for me. But I will do this.

They pull the door shut to hopefully prevent the spread of a fire but they can take some getting used to.
The weird thing about that is that we always have our doors closed. It being an apartment building, our door to the hallway is our front door of our home. I always keep mine locked anyway. The only change I would have liked is to make the space between the door and the door casing airtight. You can see in the hallway in through that space at night when my lights off.

Now today the big thing I have to try to do is to put that big microwave box on my walker to put in Sonny's trunk. It is a big box. I had stored it under my table and I could not put my feet out straight. Now I pushed it out from under the table and when Sonny is here I will attempt to get it on my walker.

Then I have to keep it in place leaning my body against it. I cannot use a grocery cart to take it out because I cannot lift it high enough to put it in or on the cart. I brought it to my apartment this way so I think I can do it. Trouble is that it is heavy. He cannot help me much due to his broken and cracked ribs.

I have it on my walker now. And a chair in front so part of it is on the chair. I cannot drop it. Don't want to damage it. It is what I have to do as a woman alone. Find ways to do things that work for me. Thank goodness I have a walker. Just hope this thing isn't too heavy for it. It is an old walker now.

You can't use it for yourself?

Yesterday was a good day and I got all my errands done. When we came out of Walmart it was raining and the parking lot was slippery. Sonny pulled the car up to the door so I would not have to try to walk across it. Even with my walker I did not feel safe on it. Then when we got home our driveway and ramp was very icy. Sonny walked me with my groceries down the ramp. One of the guys who live here (a younger one) walked in front of us and held the door for me to get inside. Then he took the can of salt that is by the door out to salt the ramp. He did a good job!

Got my groceries put away and took care of Jeff and I was done for the day. A lot of work but a good feeling when you know everything is taken care of. Food. Money orders for Jeff's & my rents.

In a little bit I have to go downstairs to pay our rents. I always dread doing that because you never know what bad news she (the manager) is going to give. Funny how they make you feel like we are always doing something wrong when in reality it is them. I saw on the news about a fire in an apartment building in Syracuse how the building had changed owners and then it was not being well maintained. Their building was worse than ours and much bigger but still it makes you think. Tons of code violations. I don't think anyone has ever come here from our city to access our building or judge the safety of it. Even when a tenant called them. They did not want to hear about it.

Now they say our laundry room will be changed in April. So I am going to try to get in there today to get my laundry done. I will take it down when I go to pay the rent. It would be nice to know that all 4 washers and 5 dryers will be working. I am hoping they put in machines that we can wash blankets and comforters in. Almost every time you do that these machines we have now will become unbalanced (like our management!).

Looks gray outside like maybe it will rain. If not, I will walk out to the dumpster and then try to do a small walk. If it does rain, I will walk in the hall but maybe on lower level while I do laundry.

Laundry is done! Not a quiet day though. Talked to lots of different people. Busy down there because the food bank truck was here today. So everybody coming downstairs to pick up their two boxes. I think I was distracted............when I went to get my 2nd load of laundry out of the washing machine I saw my bag that I hang on my walker inside the machine on top of the just washed laundry!!!!

What I knew immediately was that my phone was in that bag! I looked inside the bag and nothing was wet? Not even a tissue or the cough drops. I looked at the phone and nope, not wet either. Nor my change purse (that I have had from the 1970's and didn't want it to be damaged). All I can say is Wow. My laundry was wet. Every single piece was washed and cleaned. It was a load of towels which are quite thick. So maybe it got wound up inside of them. So anyway I will be careful next time. I had set the bag on top of the laundry when I brought it downstairs.
