Relocating in the USA pros and cons

Thank you people for so much diverse info, in fact, I was almost positive about relocating to DFW area just before covid, which ruined my plans big time and made me put all on hold...
Big negative about DFW, TX area is high property tax, my savings got pretty much depreciated once USD got almost twice higher in the past year... and paying 2.5 to 3.5% a year on property tax is way to much for me. I was planning on buying a home near a lake in DFW, love to be near the water, swimming and stuff like that.
My current business is related to paving metal bridges, it is a very specialized work. I manufacture and install a special polymer compound which lasts 20 to 30 years of heavy traffic on flat steel plate deck bridges. My family came from Europe, I currently live in Brazil.
I can't retire right now but plan on doing so in the USA, where I believe I could franshise or even sell this technology to a larger group. Anyway, that apart, I would be interested in finding a place where I could afford a home near a lake or so and not too far from a major large city.
Maybe someone could suggest some areas... I like warm places but love snow in the winter too, kinda not too far north neither south...
Zillow is a good starting tool but if I had some good references from people who have lived some place like that, it'd be a great hint. Low crime rates, not too high living cost, etc...
Thank you again for all your attention.
The desirable areas of California are likely out of your price range, as are the taxes. Many are leaving California for Boise Idaho (generally not too much snow in the winter) and Texas. I have relatives in Boise and San Antonio. Both seem pleased. Texas has several lakes. Boise, I don't know. Once again, check out: https://www.areavibes.com/ -- it not only rates cost of living, crime etc, but it often includes comments of residents. BTW, the states with the lowest property taxes are (I believe) Louisiana, Alabama, West Virginia, Mississippi, and Arkansas.

Welcome to the forum.

Don’t move to Utah. The houses here are extremely expensive as more and more people move in prices have skyrocketed. Rents are also extremely high as well. The traffic is horrendous and @Alligatorob must not have driven to SLC recently or during peak traffic hours which seems to be all the time. Takes us 45 minutes just to get to Ogden. ☹️ But there is work here.

Utah is LDS, but with the influx of new people we are probably changing, the last few years it’s been about 50-50. I am not Mormon either, and the LDS (mormons) can be a bit clannish. But, as an adult, this does not effect me much. It can really effect children. (Btw, the schools are awful.). Putting that aside the state is really changing especially SL county as we are swamped with new apartment buildings, a large homeless population, and increasing crime.

The weather is very changeable-currently too hot in the summer and too cold in the winter. We have had terrible drought conditions the past few years and while we are getting snow now, it is not nearly enough. We also suffer from major fires, in fire season, and flooding when we get rain.

Would I move if I could? Probably not 😂. I’ve been here over 35 years, I’ve already paid for my burial spaces. Stuck forever in Utah 🤪☹️

My daughter and family moved from Utah to El Paso, Texas. They love it there. Houses are really inexpensive.

Well, times are always changing, sometimes not for best... See what happened to CA, the homeless people and all related issues, it seems that it may spread all over.
El Paso is right on the board, famous crime issues cartel related and must be too hot, but depending where you live maybe you are far enough from these problems and enjoy it.
I believe there must be places that are still safe and close enough to a large city. I am looking for a relatively retired place, away from tourists and passing by or visitors. Maybe asking too much...

I don't disagree with much of what @Aneeda72 has said. I think the reasons for our differences mostly boil down to that she lives in the city and I don't.
I live in Salt Lake County. 😊. When I worked, I used to work in Salt Lake City. Had to take the bus, but now they have the train which is far nicer except you have to take a bus to get to the train 😂
