Had them in high school. Loved ‘em.
I remember a Westinghouse radio that had a leather snap-on case. … still managed to get sand in it whenever we took it to the beach.
I have a Sony boom box that I bought a few years ago to replace the previous one I had. Just last month I bought a CD player that is not a boom box. It sounds ten times better. I kept the boom box though.
I was in Iowa and had a cheap generic boom box, guy on another machine 30' away had a SONY. I learned then that cheap ain't for quality. Turned up mine on high, could still hear his and his was on 6, I was maxed out!
I still have a Sony for the beach/backyard ... I may have had it for 30yrs maybe. Something like that.
It works fine but lives on the top shelf of a closet, awaiting adventure.
I remember the ginormous ones that the guys used to carry around on their shoulders. I'll bet they're old men now with one shoulder lower than the other...LOL.
I remember them. My son had one, two actually. He went out with one that I told him not to take with him and it was stolen. My husband brought me a boom box which my son and I (both audiophiles) determined sounded better than the highly touted Boise radios. I bought one and returned it once we determined that.
I still have one of these, fully operational. AM/FM radio, CD player, dual auto-reversing cassettes, clock, recording timer like a VCR. Infrared remote.
The speaker boxes can detach and be separate 6 feet away on each side. AC powered, clock and station preset memory powered by 4 AA cells, and 10 D cells for the amplifier (or car battery power can also be used).
It's a beast, but most of its life has been as a bookshelf system.
If one isn't buying it for the CD playing or cassette, many are just going with a powered speaker with bluetooth. You can stream music, and most have an internal rechargeable battery that will play for many hours, and some even have a light show. Just an alternate choice.
