Remember the Record Club Of America or Columbia House?

I was a member of The Record Club of America, inexpensive albums, new music, rare unknown bands and artists

Back in the day our band would be playing a gig somewhere. Sometime during that night I stop the proceedings to make an announcement..
"I have some great news and I would like to share it with everybody here, I just signed a record deal!"

As the crowd stood there, the rest of the guys in the band would start shaking their heads and looking annoyed at me.
I would turn around and see the band's reaction, then proudly exclaim..

"Hey, it's a great deal! I get 8 record albums for a penny then just have to buy five more!"

They had about 8 or 10 records that were good. They were the hook to get you to join. The rest were garbage. And after you joined they would never add any new good ones. Just more garbage. And they would keep sending you the garbage ones every month with not enough time to return them (at your expense) before they would charge you for them. I ended up oweing them money which I never paid. And I remember getting threatening letters from them. I was only about 13 at the time and it scared me, until a buddy of mine who had been in a similar situation with them told me that his Dad had informed him that their "contract" as they called it with him was unenforceable because he was a minor.

That's true, and Colombia House was indicted for that scam (probly the other one, too). I guess they settled, I don't remember.

I was a member, but I was 18 when I signed up. I got some really good albums and then I just stopped ordering, and then I moved and left no forward.
