Remember??

At our house it was always Vicks VapoRub in a jar.

I hated the stuff when I was a kid but I still use it today!

I like the smell as well. And what I have now is oil of wintergreen. I just love the smell of that. They use it in liniments. I just pour it on my hand and rub it into the skin . Keeps my skin from drying out in the winter months.

They no longer recommend Vicks for small children. Apparently it irritates the lungs.
 
I remember. We always had them on hand back in the 50's. Vicks VapoRub as well. My Mom would rub it on my chest and then would pin a soft square of cloth to my PJ's. She always had those squares on hand. I think they came from my Dad's old undershirts. I guess she did it so the Vicks wouldn't ruin my PJ's.
 
I used the inhaler years ago, but not lately. As a kid, my mother used to rub the Vapo-rub on my chest, I didn't like the smell but it did seem to clear my nasal congestion.
 
Vicks always seemed to work when I was a kid. A hot bath, a hot tottie , [very light on the Southern-Comfort] rubbed with Vicks, and cocooned in bed covers...off to sleep. Most every time I can remember, it worked...darn-it, had to go to school the very next day.....:(
 
I also use an inhaler...I just get the Walmart brand every 2 or 3 months. I'm outdoors puttering/working nearly everyday the weather permits, and there are all sorts of weeds, etc, in our forest which often give me a stuffy nose. So, a couple of snorts on the inhaler, and I'm good to go for another few hours.
 
People were actually extracting some kind of substance from the cotton thingy that was inside the inhaler and injecting it to get high. I don't know if they have changed the formula to combat this or not. Apparently the stores were on the lookout for someone coming in and buying more than a couple of them at a time.

I remember that as well, jujube. And they were unavailable for quite some time. Maybe the new ones don't have a cotton thingy inside. Or yeah, more likely, they removed that particular substance.

Whatever what was inder was better than what they have today!! The newer ones don't seem to be as effective!! dunno.gif

we had that too, grew up with it

had some company come over
brother and sister and me and my brother got into things
the sister dipped into the vaporub
talked about how much she liked it
waved it around on two fingers
ate it

told her about my dad putting it up his nose

never saw a gurl throw up quite like that
 
My mom had a bottle of a mix of turpentine and some kind of oil and rubbed it on my chest when I was congested and or muscle aches. The turpentine provided heat while the oil protected your skin.
I still use my Vicks inhaler and I use it just for the rush of menthol. My mom would put Vicks Vapor Rub under my nose to open my nostrils
