Bed Bath Beyond got to expensive trying to live of off niche customers including those with higher incomes. Over a decade ago one could get some pretty good deals there along with finding a larger assortment of products.

When I used to live in the city (New York), I went there a few times. I don't recall if I actually bought anything. Some stores in the city, I'd go in, look at some prices, and then promptly leave within minutes.

Big store chains are just leased buildings with shelves filled with goods for sale, which were gotten on credit. Outside of the name over the door, there really isn't much to a store. It's the store's image that counts for sales, and once that image isn't what the public wants, you have an empty store.

Yes, if I need some kind of home good item that I can't get second hand, I'll go to a discount store like Ross, or less TJ Max, or Walmart etc. Paring knife, cotton sheets or bed pillows for example.

I always like BB&B but I have to admit that I did more looking than buying. The clearance sales were good. It seems to me that as stores close they are not being replaced with new companies and choices are limited. Of course Amazon has everything.

Traditional retail stores are coming under increasing pressure, due to increased online/internet purchasing. The costs of maintaining a store...taxes, maintenance, employees, utilities, etc., etc., are passed along to the consumers, and add substantially to the prices we pay. Every year, more and more people find that they can buy the same items, online, at a lower cost, even with shipping charges. If this trend continues, traditional "retail" may be "history" in the not too distant future.....with perhaps little more than grocery stores surviving.

BB & B has been struggling for quite some time. They started out closing a few stores here and there but left the one closest to us open. I was always a Linen & Things person and only went to BB & B if I couldn't find it at L & T. I could also find some things at other places for less expensive prices then it got to be that I just didn't need anymore household items. I still have a couple of those don't really expire coupons from BB & B.
