Retirement but...

According to my age I now qualify for retirement but my brain says otherwise so I have had an idea, fatal I know. The idea is to start a speech based online radio station where all the content is generated and shared by people like us.

For some reason the only ones I can find seem to think I just want to listen to music, I don’t and if I did I have lots of choices available. The idea comes from walks that I used to take with a friend. We would spend hours walking and talking about life the universe and everything and were always stimulating and food for thought. This is just one idea I have more.

So what do you think? Interested in learning a new skill and becoming a radio star ;)
Looking forward to hearing your thoughts.

The talk radio format isn't new. That was the only format they had at the dawn of the Radio Age. I'm sure if you search around, you will find lots of small radio stations with a talk format, who will give you some airtime. There must be pro-radio industry associations that may help you find such a station.

Sounds interesting to me.
I worked at a very small independent radio station in a little town up in northern Calif for about a year or so, back in the 90s. There was not a whole lot of talking, though. I played a predetermined list of songs (on cassette tapes) and announced the station's ID and list of current sponsors about every 15 minutes.
Let us know if you get something going, Jer.

Ha! I had the same idea years ago but it was a TV show. The whole show is letting people (ordinary people) express their opinions. I think it would be a great hit! Why should we only listen to celibrities? Real people are more interesting! Everyone can have their moment in the Sun!
Jer, GO FOR IT!

The internet is flooded with our opinions already in forums, on youtube, vimeo, countless web sites, and every possible social media outlet. I wouldn't doubt that there are already internet radio stations spouting somebody's opinion. In a crowded space, if you can truly come up with something different from the already existing crowd, go for it. We could use something refreshingly new. :)

First thanks for taking an interest and I would like to comment on your suggestions.

Fuzztbuddy & tbeltrans I agree and you could add a million podcasts to the list and trust me I have listened to a lot of them but very few hit the spot for me. "We could come up with something refreshingly new" That's what I am hoping.

Murrmurr & Gaer I hope we can get something going and TV is phase 2 ;)

Let me start with a personal opinion for the why. Since the pandemic started traditional media has just gone down hill. In short what seems to be happening is they have simply plugged themselves into social media and use anything they can find as a launchpad for a story. In short they seem to be more part of the problem than the solution. When I talk to friends they all say the same thing.

I also feel people of our age have a lot of skills to offer that is being overlooked and I for one feel frustrated by that and would like to highlight those skills and have them recognised and where possible rewarded. Add to this that the fact that it concerns me that the internet is fast becoming ruled by a handful of major players and Sir Timothy John Berners-Lee must be asking himself how did we get here.

That's the why. Before we get to the how, call this market research if you like, I have always been interested in learning new skills and working with others on projects, for me it's a buzz. That said I have friends that are retired and are happy to pick up a set of golf clubs everyday, many of them are ex journalists to my surprise, but each to their own.

So next question. Are you the kind of person that would like to learn a new skill, do something creative and do you have friends that feel the same way? If there are enough of us I would be happy to put in my time and skills, if not I will start looking for a set of golf clubs, only joking ;)

Thanks for your time and feedback.

How old are you? I may have missed seeing that. No, I do not want to learn a new skill. I have enough trouble remembering the old skills. I am very very creative already so I am not interested in doing anything else that is creative.

Hmm, I have been unable to get to sleep tonight and now it’s almost morning. Welcome to the forum.

Hi Aneeda72 I am 65 thanks for the reply and the welcome and I guess this is not for you which is absolutely fine.
Try a hot chocolate before bed with maybe a little something in it ;)

Lol, no to both. Diabetic and I don’t drink. But thanks anyway.

We have two local talk stations and the primary topic is always politics, politics and more politics. I am sick of politics, so if you go forward with your venture, ban politics as subject matter like this forum. I believe there is a website where radio stations across the country can be accessed so you could see what's out there along the lines you are interested in. I like your idea though.

Hi Chet. I kinda agree with you about politics but to my mind its not the politics its the way the media report the politics that's the problem. Personally I think you would get more common sense from the general public. Thanks for liking the idea though.
