Revivng old threads

I'm new to this site and am wondering about the 'etiquette of the post'. In browsing the site I notice interesting items that I might like to respond to but they could be weeks, months or even years old. I know it's possible but is it appropriate to revive an old post. In other words, will seasoned members be bored with the rehash of an 'old' topic? or does it matter? or are there enough newer members such as myself to have a meaningful discussion if the topic is still current? Just askin' ...

(Yes, I've often wondered why some people dig up old threads. Seems like a waste of time and I usually just skip them.)
 
I don't know if anyone else minds, but I don't. It surprises me sometimes, to see a really old post come back to life, but it can be interesting too. .... there are plenty of new members, so it is new to many anyway.
 

Generally, we encourage members to use existing threads, especially when it's a time insensitive topic. By using old threads long time members don't have to discuss the same topics again and again, and also, the forum will have more thorough discussions with input from old and new members.

But on the other hand, if you don't like to bump old threads, please feel free to start your own threads.
 
On one forum I post at, the admin refers to reviving dead threads as "thread necromancy".

He doesn't approve.

Just googled it.

Apparently he didn't coin the term. Looks to have been in popular use for some time now.

helenbacque, Matrix is our admin. So the only thing I would add is that at the bottom of my page, in every thread, is a "Similar Thread" list. I think I remember clicking on one and replying to it because it was just a little different and added something extra to the forum. It works great if you want to use one. Some of the old ones lack the anger there is in the world today and is refreshing (in the politics forum, that is). Welcome to the Seniors Forum!
 
hi Helen - welcome to the forum. All comments seem to be welcome - don't be mean or have a potty mouth and I'm sure you should feel free to post your thoughts just like everyone else does. How's life in central Florida? I thought about living there several years ago and went for a visit in July. Oh my, the heat and humidity were overwhelming and I realized the only way I could function there was to be constantly in an air conditioned environment - maybe being near or at the shore would have been better. In the end I just "stayed put". Rebecca

A new thread on a specific subject will get more attention than posting a comment on page 7 of an existing thread of the same topic.

I would suggest starting a new thread but reference the old one if the info in the old thread is relevant.
For example:

"I noticed the Guess The Tune thread and thought a similar thread to do BLAH BLAH BLAH would be interesting."

Post that on page 89 and you'll get no response.
Post it in a new thread you'll probably get a response.
 
Hi Rebecca, thanks for response. Heat and humidity is not so oppressive after you've been here a while but at first, it's no fun. I lived in central FL about 30 years ago so knew what I was getting into but I need to be near my daughter at this stage of my life and this is where her husband's work is. Life is so much easier with them nearby. Ta
