Robin Hood Waiter Gave Out $3,000 In Free Drinks, Charged With Grand Larceny

Should have worked at McDonald's. Wouldn't have been any tips to try and snag and if he gave away free drinks management wouldn't have noticed and neither would the customers.

I'm surprised this waiter did this for 6 months unscathed. I think he's a croc myself. He didn't do his actual job which included correctly charging the customers. Then to say he was helping those in need, unless every single customer was a homeless person they were paying customers. If one is destitute they don't walk into an IHOP for a cheap meal. Then he says he was being generous, yeh-with other people's money.
 
How did they arrive at the dollar amount is what I would like to know? Three thousand dollars sounds very specific. Did they come up with this figure because it changed what he could be charged with from a misdemeanor to a felony? If it would have been a white dude instead of a black one would they have maybe just fired him and not pressed charges? How can they know for sure those customers would have purchased drinks other than water if he gave them the drinks by removing a drink from their bill after they had already ate. It seems like a case could be made for him giving away free drinks based on the appearance of each customer (affluent as opposed to not being very well off) as easily as saying he was generous with someones money.

It WAS for bigger money..not tips. I know that scam. I used to wait tables. I worked with a girl that did the same thing. What she would do was NOT write down the drinks on the ticket & then later go back and tell the customer she forgot to write the drinks could she have the money for the drinks. She would then just pocket the money they gave her. She also stole from the cash register. The rest of us waitresses were told by management that we were going to have to pay for the stolen cash register money. I dug my heels in & told him " I'm not paying for cash she steals. She don't whistle while she works , she twitches while she works. "

Same thing in retail. I never worked for food service but you can't believe how much stuff walks out of stores. And like you say nobody notices, nobody cares. Sure every quarter some store manager will give a speech on shrink. Really he should be applauding the cashiers who keep the self check from breaking down. It's all a sham.
