I always did like Roger Miller. He had his problems, though, as unfortunately a lot of great performers had.
My second year in college, I had a small part-time job (one of many...) ushering at the university auditorium. Roger Miller and Red Buttons were the stars of a big show for the annual huge weekend blast at the university, and there were to be two shows that evening. In the first show, Roger Miller came on the stage, obviously drunk and/or high, staggered around, tried to sit on a stool and fell off, would start to sing a song and then stop, wandered off the stage and back on and told a few jokes that Red Buttons had just told in his set previously. Finally, someone came out and escorted him off the stage and someone else performed.
By the second show that evening, he was back in form again and put on a fantastic performance. I really enjoyed that second show.
That was the great part of that job, other than the pittance it paid......getting to see the shows, even if it was just standing at the back of the auditorium.
