People were chillin' on the beach when this giant wave took them by surprise. Updated reports say a 9th person was hospitalized; several other people were injured . A lifeguard had to be rescued. The first floor of a woman's hotel was destroyed as was someone's garage. During a subsequent forecast, 30 to 40 ft waves expected this afternoon. Seeing the wave hit then rush down the streets really did remind of a mini tsunami. Video footage included:
Strong waves pound California coast, injuring at least 8

Wow. Really blamed on just a bad storm? Sounds odd. Anyone know if it has happened before?

Sure, a N.K. Sub probably blew up off in the distance while ramming a Pier. ...:ROFLMAO: Sure hope it's mostly good to go in a few days. Live by the sea, it's a cruel mistress. Old saying, go down in ships.

Thanks for video @OneEyedDiva daughter and I watched. It's freakish to see these flash floods in so many places on Earth these days...

I have been watching the videos of this on Twitter, and it is scary amazing. People are out there on surfboards and just having a great time, while cars and people and motor homes on the beach are literally being swept away by the huge waves !
The dolphins were swimming with the surfers and seemed to be having fun, too..
Apparently, this is called a King Tide, and the waves are king Waves, and they are over 25 feet high sometimes. The buildings nearby had water swirling right up into the bottom of them.
I am not surprised that people were killed after watching those surfers swept under with the giant waves.

Such large waves during high tide hours during periods when the jetstream is pushing storms up towards Oregon and further north have always been occurring. And the locations where waves occasionally crash into near shore infrastructure are always the same. Local news crews often stake out those areas waiting for the predictable to happen and then for the sake of sensation, post news stories as though everyone ought be surprised.

Infrastructure at such places, much too close to the ocean often built before zoning laws, know that with certain sea rise now with global warming, that their end is approaching. Most of our Pacific Coast shore areas have high bluffs with level plateaus above, well away from any harm like on the image above that is about 20 feet higher. However some shorelines are not and if they are not buffered by sand dunes, are in the path of large wave events. There are also plenty of expensive homes built too close to shores atop shore bluffs that during storms eat away cliffs and regularly cause structures to tumble down into the sea.

People out witnessing such events are of course often ignorant of how close they can safely get and more often than not will move as close as they see any others that then may draw even more foolish. Simple monkey see monkey do human nature of significant numbers that follow what others do instead of thinking for themselves. As someone that used to occasional fish our pacific rocky shores and still occasionally does nature photography thereabouts, I always try to keep one eye on incoming waves, ready to flee back away from edges.

"Cities along the California coast were warning residents that the rough waters caused by a Pacific storm this week can turn quickly into dangerous waves."

"Stay away from rocks, jetties, piers, and other waterside infrastructure," the National Weather Service in the Bay Area said on social media. "Never turn your back to the ocean!"

these are from the article in original post.

This has been warned in the news all week .... i wonder how many flock there instead to see or take picture or worst yet a selfie.....
so many people ( perhaps in zero trust in media or government ) think warnings are overblown

This wont be the last time where people go anyway to things like this.... i have been to many beach and regardless of watch for waves they stand on wet outcropping rocks for photo and have been caught off guard.
