Any suggestions on what to do when Roku freezes? It seems to freeze on the ads at times. I've tried waiting it out to see if it times out and restarts but that doesn't always work. Does anyone else see this with their Roku?

It's only a year or two since I bought it. I'll try removing the power, etc. Thanks for the help.

@birdy ... here is a link I found for Roku Frozen: Basic Fixes to Try

If you are still unable to resolve the issue, try contacting Roku customer support with the following information:
-Roku device
-serial number
-device ID
-Roku OS
(these all can be found in Settings > System > About)
-Tracker ID (you can get the Tracker ID by pressing the Home button 5x, followed by the Back button 5x, when this issue occurs)
-when did this issue start to occur

... seems far fetched, but are the batteries still good in the remote?

Most likely Roku will tell you to try a full factory reset before they'll do much for you. This might work, but it can be a pain. You have to go through everything again from the time you originally unboxed it. Network settings and everything else are lost and have to be entered again.

I had this problem, too. I had to do a restart every time I turned the TV on, and sometimes had to do it twice.

I think the issue is because Roku made some recent changes; added streaming channels and deleted others, and probably got some new sponsors with new ads; and it was causing this glitch.

It finally stopped happening here recently, like a couple weeks ago. So maybe just be patient while they get things squared away.

Well I have a Roku tv, it was working fine until I subscribed to Max TV steaming, which is our phone/internet provider and also has tv. Since I'm in a more rural area we only can have satellite or now this streaming tv. This app has live tv and PVR. The live tv works fine but when I watch some recorded program it suddenly does freeze. The problem can be solved by unplugging the tv from power and plugging it back in.
But of course that is not the way to go. I contacted my provider and they are trying to find the problem, it does it randomly, goes well for a couple of days and suddenly freezes but only when watching a recorded program. A few days ago they changed all the equipment (box and remote) and put a new phone line in.
It was working better for a few days and now the last 2 days it freezes in the morning at the beginning of a recording saying there is no enough bandwidth to play the recording, which is very strange. Yesterday the technician was here and cannot find any problem with my internet line, he changed me onto another "card" in their office, but this morning same thing at the same time!!!. He will call me tomorrow to see how its going.
This is a very strange problem, they are puzzled with it. I didn't think that it is my Roku Tv since I have it for about 3 years there was no problem so far. Prime Video and Netflix work fine, so does live tv. Unless Roku tv doesn't like/agree with the Max tv streaming!

Just to add my experience with a frozen screen ...

I have two ROKU TV's and had a problem with the one in the bedroom.

While watching a show, the screen would randomly and suddenly just switch to a "add Netflix" channel screen.
When it did that, nothing I did with the remote worked. The screen was frozen. Would have to cycle power on the TV.

Turns out the remote was faulty. On the remote, there is a dedicated Netflix button and somehow was sending that signal randomly.
I verified the fault was with the remote by using the remote for my living room TV with no problem. Both remotes are the same.

Roku OS 12.5 started rolling out a couple of months ago. More support for live pap sports and other crap nobody wants, but they are trying to lure in the hillbillies. I suspect that might be part of the problem.

Wouldn't hurt to contact ROKU customer support. That's what they're paid for and I'm sure they want happy customers.
They'll let you know what information about your problem and device they may need to try and help.

Recently my Roku froze while streaming Netflix after they hiked the price by 100%. First it would buffer, then freeze, then the Roku would reset itself. I didn't have that problem with any of the other streaming platforms. Reading about your issue, I wonder if you only notice the freeze while using one particular streaming service or all of them? I think you've gotten some good suggestions here.

Anyone follow Luke at Cord Cutters News?

He covers a lot f things like Roku. Here he tells about a coming layout change on he home screen. The channel ("app") tiles are going to a 4-by layout with smaller tiles, but he says an option will let you switch back. I don't have a 10 foot TV screen, so I don't want things too small to read.

he has that "East Grand Rapids" accent, sort of soft Elmer Fudd, but most people can still understand him.

I have had Roku TVs for several years now and I just do the system restart when there are any issues ('Settings', 'System', 'Power', 'System restart', 'restart'). Usually my Roku works fine, but a few weeks ago I had to do several restarts over a period of a few days. Not sure I'm right but I think of it as similar to Windows updates where sometimes you have to restart a computer before it installs the next update and then repeat until it gets everything up-to-date.
