My wife and I went to see Ronnie in concert last evening. Kind of surprising, but Ronnie had no opening group or soloist and no intermission. Ronnie sang non stop, except for a few moments here and there for some dialogue with his music director. The show lasted about an hour and a half.
He began by singing a few of his not-so famous songs, followed by his number one hits, followed by his Grammy winners. I thought that he struggled early with the parts of the songs that required him to hit the higher notes, but did recover nicely. I told my wife that I thought that his struggle was because he did not warm up backstage. On the way out after the show, 2 other ladies mentioned the same thing, so it wasn’t my imagination.
I liked some of Ronnie’s songs and his style. He doesn’t sound like all the rest, if you can understand that. It was a good performance and although I wouldn’t go again, I would recommend to anyone that likes Country music to check him out. For being 76 y/o, he did good. Better than Sinatra did when I saw him at 80 y/o. But again, I was glad that I had the chance to see him.
The show was in Frederick, Maryland, which is an hour and a half from my home. We had dinner at an Italian restaurant before the show. Then, we walked down the street that was full of little boutiques and specialty shops, which my wife had to go in and spend money on some glass ornaments. The theater was just another block down the street, so we hiked it. The only parking available was on the street. It was an old cinema house that was refurbished into a performing arts house, which a lot of cities have done with their old movie houses.
My wife heads back to Florida in the morning.
