Run ! the vultures are coming!!

@hawkdon

There is such a thing as “the return of the Hinckley Buzzards in Hinckley, Ohio. It is a huge deal to the residents.

They have already arrived, but maybe the group you saw is a later arrival? I don’t know where their flyway is. I only know that the Hinckley buzzards return every year on the same day in March without fail, and it’s possible these are late arrivals.

Hinckley is the township over from where I live, Buzzard Day is the big event of the year. There's a lot of myth involved with buzzard day, they really don't all come soaring home on the same day every year, they start showing up in late Feb. But it's not official until a buzzard is spotted on Buzzard Day morning by the duly appointed official spotter.lol

I Have never seen a Vulture in real life, only on screen...

Next time I see them on the road, picking a dead carcass clean, I will try and get a picture🤠

It is illegal to kill them in my state. They are great cleaner-uppers of dead critters.

One of the farmers had drug a dead cow up to the road, waiting for the truck to pick it up. By the time the truck got to our road, the Vultures had the carcass picked nearly clean. It was the middle of summer yet the odor was minimal thanks to the Vultures.

Seriously though, what an amazing sight that must have been!
Were they noisy?
Calls. Black Vultures are silent most of the time. They make raspy, drawn-out hissing sounds while feeding and fighting, along with grunting noises that can sound like hungry pigs or dogs barking in the distance. Courting vultures may give a yapping sound.

Stay inside---what a noise to face!

I could not tell what type of vulture these were, normally we get
visitss from TURKEY VULTURE, THAT hgave a red neck....as far as "noise" I
could not hear aany coming from them....but what a sight!!!

Just stepped out on back porch, looked skyward, and never have
I ever seen so many VULTURES flying circles, about 200 foot up
and round and round they go!!!! I sweare there were hundreds, must be coming back to the area for spring!!!!!! sorry no pics....
We sure can use them, so much road kill on the roads and especially interstate highways. Loads of deer right now,
almost 1 every 3 miles apart.

We have vultures in Pennsylvania. They help keep the land clean. I remember watching them go crazy on a gut pile after cleaning a deer. They will even risk eating carcass remains off the highways and roadsides.

Yes, that's true.

My husband was a wildlife conservation officer for years in PA. I remember going with him to retrieve roadkill and taking them to a designated dumping ground. Vultures were at the site, feasting. When you would get too close to them, they would give a warning sign and if you didn't back off, they'd upchuck. A pretty nasty smell, to say the least.
