The person who plays this pompous windbag is an entertainer. He says outrageous things to get a reaction, and he has made multi-millions doing so, for years.

I strongly suspect that he doesn't believe 90% of the nonsense he puts on the air, but he's discovered that his radio audience is ignorant enough to fall for his act, and support his sponsors, so he keeps at it.

Pay me his salary of over $30M/yr., and I'll get on the air and say goofy stuff, too.

We will agree to disagree. His smoking was a bit different: He was addicted to tobacco/cigars, and, as many tobacco junkies do, he made up excuses and rationalized his way around his weakness.
