Russia hit with 8.7 earthquake, Tsunami warning on West Coast of the US !

There was an 8.7 quake just off the shores of Russia, which is a very large earthquake. There have been some smaller quakes in the area of islands that run from Alaska to Russia, but this one was a huge quake, and there are now tsunami warnings all along the West Coast of the US.

Reading of this, I had a flashback of the earthquake we had on the Island of Shemya, near Kamchatka.
The quake in 1975 was 7.6 and caused damage to the runway and buildings.

Aircraft was the only way on or off the island, so we were concerned as no planes could land.
I was finishing up my 1 year duty there and remember it being a very busy time due to the reason we were there.

Read that the island of Shemya was damaged in the latest quake and military personnel were evacuated.

A couple of videos floating out there showed dead whales washing up or stranded in Japan and coastal community flooded in Russia.

Probably more celebrity drama/debate in Hawaii than waves with evacuees being told/not told they could use a celebrity's road on higher ground
 
The tsunami warnings for north California were silly. I read that Eureka and Crescent City had waves of 3.7 feet.!
I used to live in the Eureka area, and waves of that height were seen almost every day...šŸ˜„
 
There were only watches, no warnings, for the California coast. I know from living in Florida and enduring hurricanes that there is a big difference. Just happy there was no destruction along the coast.

That is called the ring of fire, so yes could set off other quakes, or volcano's. Luckily the tsunami's haven't been too bad. I remember one time years ago the tidal wave was predicted to be pretty big, so of course some darned fool had to go to the beach to watch it. That time it was a biggie and the fellow saw too much of it, he didn't survive.
 
Guess I should have thought another earthquake from my past was due.
The recent 4.3 quake near Riverside, California once again triggered my thoughts.

We were living there when the two quakes hit in 1992 and 1994.

Enough damage to our house that it was condemmed and we decided to just move on from California for good.

The fact that you have zero warning they are going to happen adds an element of worry to your everyday plans.
As a family, we discussed where to go if at our house when they happened. (the back yard, without power lines)
Just sitting at home doing family time, even a small tremor was taken serious by us.

Survival items were stored where everyone could get to them.
Still have emergency items at the ready and guess we always will.
