I'd rather do it on a barge that you can just moor any place along the way, have a pint at the local pub, and sleep it off on-board in your own cot.

I don't think canals have many "curves". If they have to change direction they dig man-made lakes and angle the next stage in the required direction.

The Dutch are the best at navigating canals and
they know all about the ship that they built, they
will have reached the sea safely.

Most of Holland is below the "Sea Level", they keep
extending the dykes and claiming more land from it,
thereby making their country a bit bigger every time
they do.
