The latest on the streets is that Sugars/carbs are the Real Culprits...we've been led to believe for as long as I can recall, it's salt.

So look at this and cut back and even eliminate a lot of the sugars in your life and see what that does for BP.

I won't bring cookies in my house anymore...not the case a couple yrs ago. And breads have not come in my house for about 10 yrs....i eat a breadless sandwich.

I believe a lot of it depends on the person and maybe even their DNA makeup. Never been a believer in the one the size fits all scenario . I'm old enough to remember when eggs were bad, then butter's bad, then coffee's bad, then bacon's bad, and on and on. Then miraculously, a different study comes out and all of a sudden that stuff maybe, really isn't all that bad after all. :p Myself, I have never changed my eating style. It strikes me that common sense should kick in. I suppose if I was to eat a bowl of sugar and a cup of salt and a heaping mound of bacon everyday, it would probably be bad for me. All my life I've eaten anything and most everything I've ever wanted and my BP has never changed more than a point or two. JMHO

I agree that eggs, butter and coffee are not that bad in moderation, I don't think bacon ever jumped over to the 'healthy' list though. :D

Our body needs salts but does not NEED sugars, cancer cells do I've read. The only thing about sugar is it tastes so good and so many are addicted.

S.D. you are fortunate no changes in BP.

I liked the article, High Blood Pressure is my worst health problem...

Testing your body with eliminating sugars/carbs for even a week could be a good test. I've changed my mind on all the sweets and my BP comes in real nice but I am on BP meds...some yrs back BP would be high in doc's office but with much LESS or NO sugars that's changed. So makes sense to me and save one's teeth too....

I think Processed Carbs are bad - not carbs in general. After all, carbs are our main source of energy. A processed carb is any food that is "made," like bread, pasta, chips, & anything made with flour. Raw fruit, beans, etc are "Complex Carbs" & are supposed to be healthy.

I have a very sweet tooth, my BP has never altered more that a point or 2...

What's a breadless sandwich? how do you make that?

No bread, sometimes romaine lettuce leaves for holding it together and often just meat and cheese and use a fork/knife to cut it, add some onion and cuke slices....and if one eats tomatoes add slices but I don't eat tomatoes. usually.

Thats what I do occasionally JH just to cut down on bread intake but gotta have the tomatoes on top, with a side of radishes, grapes or blueberries :)

Because of stomach issues I can't have anything acidic like lemons, tomatoes, strawberries, raw onions , pickles, etc..it's a bit of a minefield..

It's kinda like an open face sandwich. My friend was telling me and I hear this so much now, cutting way back on carbs works on reducing inflammation and that's what my joints scream of.

Gee whiz. Just make your own bread and don't put any sugar in it.

Well...one of the "perks" of diabetes is learning bad news about my favorite foods. It's a bit more complicated than avoiding sugar.
Bread is made with flour. Flour is a processed grain made by grinding wheat into powder. Anything made with flour is very quickly converted to glucose (sugar) because the processing gives our digestive system much less work to do & your body responds to the spike in blood sugar by releasing lots of insulin. Insulin is a fat-storage hormone that prevents us from starvation by making sure we use sugar for energy, instead of fat. That's why many nutrition experts will say that excess insulin is what causes obesity; not fat consumption.

Personally, I found that to be true - at least in my case. By limiting processed carbs like bread, pasta, chips, cookies, etc. I went from a constant weight problem to 170 lbs. & I now can't gain weight, as long as I limit processed carbs.

This is probably very truly. Just cut way back/eliminate those refined carbs. For me just NOT bring breads in to the house was a big step. That was what I did 10 yrs ago.

When I think of my early life and I was raised on spaghetti and breads and eating both these at the same meal seating...what we DIDn'T know.

I agree. Even bacon can be enjoyed in moderation now and then, together with a healthy diet.

I also agree people consume a lot of sugar. Some, too much. But as far as BP, I haven't heard.

Yeah but, there is this......

Many won't believe that we made our own bacon on the farm growing up. We had a smoke house that after the salt was rubbed on it a smoltering fire smoked or cured it along with hams. I don't think sodium nitrite was invented yet. We butchered our own hogs. lol

I believe it, oh those farmers, they did it all. When my ex left the farm after college, he vowed never to go back to the farm life...he kept that promise to himself. He turned out to be a huge math and book worm.
