BELLINGHAM, Wash. -- A Bellingham High School drama teacher has issued a formal apology after her awards ceremony devolved into an evening of profanity, jokes about a priest having sex with kids, and a box of sex toys.

A parent attended the ceremony in the school auditorium with her 17-year-old daughter, who was nominated for an award. Both want to remain anonymous until after graduation on June 6.

The teacher is Teri Grimes, a veteran of three decades who is slated to retire after this year.

In an email to KOMO News, the upset mother complained about the teacher's use of profanity during the ceremony. She said Grimes repeatedly used inappropriate words and told a distasteful joke.

"I sat there with my mouth open in shock and the final straw was when a joke was told on stage about a teacher, a lawyer and a priest on a plane. The plane was going down and the teacher says we have to save the children. The attorney says "F*** the children!" and the priest says "OOOOH..Do we have time for that???" the email reads.

The parent, who brought her young daughter to the ceremony, decided to leave after hearing the joke.

In addition to what she considered to be offensive language and the off-color joke, the parent said the awards handed out during the ceremony weren't appropriate for children. She said one of the categories was for "the horniest stud," where the award was a sex toy.

I am soooo glad I don't have school age kids. If i did....they would be home schooled!!

Drama teachers are always a worry. After I attended Open Day at one of my grandchildren's schools, I wrote to the headmaster about the drama performance by the students. It was a very long letter in which I let him know why a good deal of it was inappropriate and I'm happy to say he took it on board and acted on it.

The teacher would have probably been immediately suspended if this had happened in the UK.

also a big problem now with teachers having sex with students. its getting to be very common. a lot of parents have pulled their kids out of public schools and do home teaching

Having attended graduation ceremonies for two of my grandsons last week,I can only say thank God that nothing like this occurred at either one. Our 18 yo grandson`s class was small, only 75 graduates, so a short speech was given about each graduate, noting their achievements. A few were humorous but never anything the least bit inappropriate. What the heck is happening with people these days? It`s like their brains and all common sense has disappeared. OK,have to post this-we made the local paper yesterday. The photographer who was there taking pics at the ceremony took a pic of our family afterwards- or actually, just part of our family. Some had to work that night, others came for the party the next day.

Mrs. Robinson, I had to really look, but I found you peeping out next to the graduate. That is a very good looking family, and large too. You said there are more? I bet it is grand time at get togethers.

You found me,lol. I was hiding-not a fan of pics. Yes,only two of my kids were there-the two blondy blondes to the right of the pic (orange shirt and black shirt) My son didn`t get home from working out of town til 10:30 that night and my oldest girl came the next day. Then only 8 of my 14 grands were there-although #15 is front and center in her mama`s belly :)

What a Beautiful family, Mrs. Robinson, and Congratulations on your Grandsons Graduation. :)
