school debt

I just read in the AARP paper about a lady who had 60 thousand dollars in college debt and it was her granddaughters......should we or do you pay for your grandchildren schooling....my children all have jobs and they worked their own way through school...I never finished long ago (went one year, got married, drafted and now retired from swinging hammer for a living).....I wanted to feel sorry for the 61 year old lady but I can and do not....let the kid get a job and pay their own way.......

In Canada the interest rate for university student loans is so low, its hardly is worth paying it off quickly, just the minimum monthly. And if the student is not employed, it gets deferred until they get a job. Wouldn't it be better for this lady to invest the money instead? Or let her grandchild pay it off herself over time - even a long time.
