This story has been covered by the BBC and The Sun. What a sad horrible tragedy.
So far no motive has been announced. These British xpats were well integrated and loved by their French community according to all of the interviews by reporters .
They were known to have had financial troubles some months ago but have been able to pay off those debts recently.
Strangely Mrs. Searle was found with her jewelry box and jewelry strewn all around her body which was found near the front porch.
There are rumours of this having been some kind of revenge attack. But to me with all the people around them including their children and relatives plus the French people having said they were a wonderful outgoing couple, the revenge motive is hard to believe.
Mr. Searle did work as an investigator of large banking criminality/fraud. That began a theory that someone had it out for him, but it seems doubtful because many people work in that field which is mostly just electronic surveillance and research that the idea of such horrible revenge attack sounds like red herring.
There also was a theory ‘it was the robbers did it’, but then why was her jewelry left there as well as lots of cash left out upstairs in the bedroom?
The French mayor who officiated at their wedding in 2008 guessed that it was something from their far far past.
Mrs. Searle was Scottish and her son, an actor walked her down the aisle at their wedding. Mr. Searle was English.
The couple had lived in South France for many years and had a large home with a pool. They liked to travel a lot and he had taken early retirement.
They both had one child from past relationships who are mourning them and want to be left alone at this time.
