Self Check Outs

I agree with this to a point, but the store clerk does clean up the blood from the pack of chicken and the milk spilled on the floor and bag the groceries and lift the heavy packs of soda up and over and back again 50 times a day, and often carry out everything from TV's to air compressors while watching for shoplifters, handling money and cashing paychecks.

I still don't think they should be tipped, but I've never understood why waitresses should be tipped while no one else should. Eight to ten hours on your feet dealing with cranky people is hard whether you're working in a store, a bank, or a restaurant. I've done all those jobs and waitressing was the easiest for me.

I get tired of that. I usually say, sure, but one day I wasn't in the mood and just said, "No." The clerk, a young man came to a screeching halt and said, loudly, "NO? You don't want to help sick babies?"

I said, "I do actually, but I'm not sure the March of Dimes has done all that much to help babies since the last polio epidemic and I do wonder why every single year you collect for The March of Dimes and never for anything else. For example, why not collect for schizophrenia research, it's the number one disabler of young people and yet I've never ever seen a penny asked for or donated for them. Do you know they make up the majority of homeless? Don't you care about the homeless? I give my June social security to Brain and Behavior Research every year? How much did you give them? Nothing? Don't you care about the mentally ill?"

They need to be careful which old lady they tweak.
I think it was wrong of him to confront you and draw attention to your choice. I hate that whole thing anyway. It's probably a money laundering operation. :(

I have used self-checkout 3 times, and had to call the attendant 2 out of the 3. So I don't use them.

No, they don't ask for a 15% tip. Not the ones at the grocery store, anyway.

If restaurants have self-checkout, their machine no doubt gives you an opportunity to add a tip if you want.

I refuse to use the self check out! I don't want to take someone's job from them, besides the store doesn't pay me to check myself out!

I use them if I have just a few items. Usually I just put them back in the cart unbagged and bag them in the car with my own bags.
If I have a lot of groceries I'll wait in line and read the gossip magazines from the racks. I always want to keep up with the Kardashian's after all.

Like a few others, I love self-checkout. I use it everywhere available (including Costco & Home Depot) except for Aldi where a cashier is the only option. When I was in Auckland and Sydney in 2019, I used the self-checkout at Countdown and Woolworths supermarkets, respectively. Part of it in all likelihood is comfortableness with technology in general. I bet Millennials would grudgingly use a cashier if that was the only choice.

At the end of the tape, the last thing my self checkout does is ask me for a donation to some charity of the month. They want my change I guess. You have a choice of donating the change or hitting the "NO" key.

I used to use self check out about ten years ago but stopped when I realized what the dark agenda was behind it all - taking peoples' jobs away. So now I go the cashier's aisle and have a chat with her like everyone else. And I enjoy it so much more. :)
I am just the opposite, when self checking first came out I hated the dark agenda and shunned them. Now, I like to self check unless the machines are crowded...

They're beginning to be equally crowded where I live and they have to post a store employee to watch the terminals and help if a customer requires it, so no time saved. And I do like kitching with the check out clerks since I know them all very well. :giggle:

I bet she's making a tidy sum out of that little racket...
Ummm....doubtful that's a racket. I've only seen it done for major charities, who make an arrangement with a regional or national supermarket chain, on a VERY temporary basis - like a few days, or one week max. Virtually everyone uses debit or credit cards these days; cash and checks are almost unknown (except for small purchases, when even I will use cash to break a $20 bill). Especially with the new cards with chips, plus ApplePay and Googlepay, it is so much faster to do a transaction.

So your donation has to be data-keyed into the POS (point of sale) system on the company's mainframe, in order for it to be an option. The cashier/checker can't divert the funds since it's all electronic.

It's the same idea as some of the banks use, where they'll "round up" a purchase cost and send the overage to your savings account.

I don't usually give extra to a charity on a POS purchase unless I'm familiar with it and haven't donated to them within the past year.

It was a waitress who took an extra £2 tip for herself from a credit card.. that's a Racket !!

I use self checkout any time I can because there seems to be a shortage of cashiers these days at the major grocery stores I visit. Also, it seems the cashiers that ARE there take more time than I do to get me through the line. Even if I'm buying wine and need an override there is always someone near the register that can override the "age thing". I also use self checkout at Whole Foods and Sprouts. I find the whole process very easy.

With Von's Smiths, Albertson, Sprouts, Whole Foods, Walmart Neighborhood Market, Winco, La Bonita, Gardenas & Marketon all within short driving distance all compete with each other. The exception is La Bonita. Fresh fruits veggies always are the most numerous items. Otherwise it's very rare to buy more that 6 or 7 items from each so self check out works for us.
Wednesday is the start of a weeks worth of sale prices so checking the sales & doing a circuit of less than 10 miles to take advantage of sales the cost of gas is minimal

I used self-checkout today. Our Walmart put in a new system that is unreliable and slow. The touch screens aren't sensitive enough and the weighing scale is error ridden. It's been over a month since the system has been installed and still the bugs remain.

Today I started out by putting
bananas on the scale and it rang up some random price. I just stood there until an employee came over and cleared everything. She blabbered something about it being from the last customer. What? I'm going to use a cashier from now on. Stuff like that is irritating. My blood sugar was getting low and I was feeling ill. I don't need this. Fix your damn crap already!

I used to hate self check outs, now I use them all the time at our local supermarket. I started having to use them because during the initial outbreak of COVID I'd go as soon as the store opened to avoid running into other shoppers. Sometimes there'd be only one or two other people shopping. So once the self check outs were installed, they were the only checkouts available until about 9 or 9:30. Once I got used to doing it, I began to prefer it. No cashier who's touched other people's stuff plus dirty money would be touching my groceries. I don't have to wait in line (in case there are other shoppers ahead of me) because at that time in the morning, it used to be only one register would be open.
When I shop at Walmart and Costco, I let the cashiers do their thing.

We have a few in our Costco now. I don’t think they’ll ever eliminate the cashier/packers for those with huge orders. They have an efficient system that would be destroyed by the slowdown. Even a huge order goes through very fast.
Cashiers don't pack our shopping here...we have to do it ourselves... except in Costco.. and really they're ony putting the goods back into the trolley...

Can you just imagine the Chaos if Costco went Self service checkouts ?
They have some self checkouts at our stores. I don't use them because I've gotten to know some of the checkers over the years and enjoy saying hello. More importantly, I support people's needs for good jobs. Costco is a great place to work from what I've heard.
