Senior communities. !! I don't know much about it....

I do realize it is riddled with scams and scammers-
old age and experience has solidified skepticism in me, with almost all things I am presented with- if it was a simple matter of looking it up on the net, library, or speaking with an "advisor"--and, I trusted my sources, further efforts on my part would be unnecessary. I am certain those actions would not lead to my approval-

Bottom line is money....I don't have much ..but have enough presently, and intend to maintain it....though the politicians are likely to win that issue soon-

senior communities. !! I don't know much about it.....I do realize it is riddled with scams and scammers- finally, safety! ....our safety is paramount- as of this second, no hurry and no immediate need ..but it will happen, most likely -

Thank you all for the benefit of your experiences...

over the years I have witnessed some pretty depressing situations regarding the less than really expensive accommodations-if possible I intend to try to avoid that-Again, Thank you all-

Around here you become a "New Yorker" looking for this sort of thing. You shop the obituaries, because there isn't anywhere near enough even moderately-priced housing of that kind. Most is really very pricy or bordering on extremely miserable and worn out subsidized squats.

I assume by "senior community" you're not talking about senior care homes and assisted living places.

The only issue I have with senior communities is that most of them want you to participate in their recreational activities and holiday events, run for office in their little mini-governments, volunteer for their clothes and food drives, and attend community meetings.

I'm not much for joining and participating in that kind of stuff, and I'd hate being bugged by "community coordinators", something almost all senior communities have these days.

If you're looking for cheap housing, look up Mutual Housing Authority. Or look up Low-income housing in my area or Low-income housing for seniors in my area.

"Senior communities" come in at least 57 varieties. Some like where I live in the "geezer ghetto" are condos that only for folks over age 55. There are activities, swimming pools, golf, tennis and pickle ball. For medical care you have to go "outside". There are hospitals, all sorts of doctors and practitioners. One must do a lot of research before choosing.

I'm not geared for "community" life. When my late husband and I retired in 2001 we left CA in our 40' 5th-wheel and headed to South TX. We spent the winter in a senior park along with a lot of "snowbirds" from MN, MO, IL, etc., and Canada. It was fun at first. We had a lot of activities and we'd go to MX as a group and shop.

Then, our 3rd year there, things changed. The management changed and the whole atmosphere changed. There were some people that acted like juveniles and started arguments and the bickering spread. We didn't participate in any more activities and kept to ourselves. We didn't return in the 4th year and decided to sell our truck and trailer and we bought a house closer to San Antonio.

It left a bad taste in our mouths and decided we'd never buy a condo or any other residence that was in a "community".

As I've previously quoted, "When my time's up, I'll hold my own. You won't find me in an old folks home. you got that right."

I'm not a true introvert, but I have zero tolerance for people's bullshit.

Personally I am looking into Mexico. 2500/mo and beautiful digs... Hopefully I won't be in the states in a retirement community. That was in Guadalajara about 6 years ago. So maybe 3-4000 now.
