Senior Thoughts on Abortion

My thoughts on abortion haven't changed since when I was younger. I think that women should have the right to birth control and the right to abortion. However, I think that they should take all precautions not to get pregnant in the first place. Abortions should only be performed if the mother's life is in jeopardy from the pregnancy, or if the unborn child will be born with a mental defect. I'm against late-term abortion.

I think that women who just carelessly get pregnant, should go through with the pregnancy and give the baby up for adoption to a childless couple who wants to care for the baby and love the baby forever. In this case I feel that the mother should step out of the picture, and leave the baby with their adoptive parents undisturbed. I've never personally had an abortion, nor knew of anyone who had the procedure. What are your thoughts on abortion?

My sentiments, exactly, SeaBreeze. Women take unnecessary risks simply because abortion is readily available. Abortion should not be used as a means of birth control. As you say, women who get pregnant should be encouraged to go through the pregnancy and give up the baby for adoption. I too am very much against late-term abortions, especially partial-birth abortions. Very heart-wrenching.

3rd that opinion on it.
It's a very personal conscience driven decision that I am extremely thankful that I never had to make.
I was pretty damned OCD about making sure I'd never have to make it and don't see why others can't be just as careful but that's not how things always go.

I can't even come close to an answer as to what I would have done myself, so that is one subject I have no intention of taking sides on with regard to the rights or wrongs of it.

I do believe there should be the right to choose, but the nature of the choice must be left up to whatever the individual making it feels is right for them. Doing only what won't keep us awake at night is a pretty good guideline in ethical decisions.

That's what Family Planning and all the dogooders said so abortions became legal. Now we have abortion being used as birth control. It is common for some women to have a number of abortions. I have experience of knowing where the mother or fetus was not in danger, but the abortion was ok'd. This is commonplace. Disgusting.
Abortion in New Zealand is legal in cases where the pregnant woman faces a danger to her life, physical or mental health, or if there is a risk of the fetus being handicapped, in the event of the continuation of her pregnancy. In cases not protected by these grounds, aborting an unborn child is a crime in New Zealand as per the Crimes Act 1961.
