Senior transportation not available to me

People keep telling me I need to get a credit card. Well, about 10 years ago, I went to my bank and they declined to issue one to me. Why? Because I didn't have a credit rating. Go figure. You need good credit to get credit???? I have no debts and pay my bills either through ACH or a prompt check.
Yes, you have to have good credit to get a credit card. I could never get one for that reason even though I worked in the bank as a loan officer. I was always sort of glad I was able to tell my customers that I, myself, had been denied one at the same time I had to deny them. It helped them know it was not personal. If you really, really want one, you can start with small store cards, make every payment on time, hold a job for three years saving the pay stubs to prove it, and be perfect in every way. ;)

Now, I'm glad my husband and I never had any credit. While other people were financing cars for 16% (meaning the total cost of a five year loan was twice the cost of the car) we just saved a little first and only paid the sticker price. My husband was able to retire after 22 years in the Air Force and we had enough in the bank to buy our house with cash. You would probably be amazed to see the amount of money you've saved over a lifetime of never paying finance charges for any of the things you own.

People keep telling me I need a cell phone for the convenience, but I don't see anything but inconvenience in having to make an extra bill payment, keep the thing charged, and use my one free hand (the right one holds a cane) to hold a phone and carry it from room to room.
I have no trouble doing banking and shopping online.

I've never tried Uber, but I've used taxis all my life without having to have a cell phone or credit card. Everyone did. How soon we forget and become dependant on things we are told we must have.

Not having a credit history is fine. I would try a different bank.
Some banks will give you a credit card just to open an account with them.
When you already have money in a bank, they shouldn't need to do a check on your rating.
They might give you a low credit limit but that's fine to get started, and some begin with a high limit anyway.

Even if I paid cash and didn't mortgage it?
Fidelity gave me a high limit credit card based only on my account with them, and I had no credit history.

The manager at that time is no longer there. I think there was some problem with her doing something unethical with the bank's money. Every time I go to the local branch, it seems like they have different tellers and managers. Some banks like to rotate their employees through their branch offices. I like to deal with the same people from time to time.

The last time I spoke to a branch manager and mentioned that I didn't have a credit card, he said, "You're smart." That's not the impression I'm getting from people on this message board.

He doesn’t read here about your complaints about not being able to do this and that. It was likely just a smart ass comment. Bet he had a CC.

You need a cc to build credit if you don't have any outstanding loans to build credit. You just have to be smart with them and by your posts you sound very smart and would not abuse them and get in over your head. I would apply for another CC if you need it.

If you bought (or are buying) the house you live in, you have a line of credit. That's automatic.

The best, simplest, least risky way to use a credit card is: use it to buy something you can afford, and then pay off that whole amount when you get your bill. You'll never be charged fees or interest and you'll establish excellent credit.

Then you'll suddenly get a slew of credit card offers in the mail. Toss 'em!

I don't have a credit card, don't want one. But I DO have a 6 months same as cash through Paypal. As long as its paid off within 6 months there is no interest. It has worked well for me for several years. I had no problem getting a decent loan for my last vehicle purchase either.

We had that same problem sometime back in 1970's of not getting a credit card just after we moved back to the states. Unlike you the bank where we started our checking account the manager helped us get a card AND advised us to establish credit for us both. Never had a problem that wasn't resolved in our favor for the last 50 plus years.

Traveling everywhere we wanted to go, enjoying everything that a place has to offer without carrying cash or a check book hoping the business would accept an out of state check is a benefit we got used to. Another plus is buying something that is on sale at a huge savings then paying for it 30 days later while that money is earning interest has worked well for us.

Establishing credit if you never go anywhere, never want to save money on purchases is the way to go. Obviously for you carrying cash or writing a check still works. But for how long will that last?

But the topic title was about transportation not being available to you. It is seems you don't want to come into modern times to be able to access it the way it is set up to be used.

@debodun, if you talk to the bank manager and say you’re interested in trying their credit card, they’ll approve it. It’ll be a notch in their belt. Don’t worry what that old manager said. You can put a low limit on it and arrange that the payment comes off automatically.

If there’s anyone that’s not going to abuse that card, it’s you!

@debodun
I still use a land line, connected to free Google Voice on my computer,
which has free long distance calls, and free sending/receiving of text messages.

However no cell phone, aps or texting are needed in order use Ebay, Paypal, and/or Amazon.
Just a land line and computer with internet connection, which you obviously have, work quite well.
