3-year-old shoots, kills 1-year-old in Cleveland, Ohio home

A 3-year-old boy shot a 1-year-old relative in the head Sunday in Cleveland, Ohio, killing him, according to a story from Cleveland.com.

Police investigators say the 1-year-old's mother was in the room at the time of the shooting, and had just turned her back for an instance when she heard the gunshot.

It's unclear where the boy got the gun, Cleveland Police Chief Calvin Williams said.

"A 3-year-old cannot be held accountable for a tragedy like this," said Williams. He said someone had to have supplied the weapon or "knew the weapons were there and didn't do anything to safeguard them, so people will be held accountable for this tragedy."

There have been no arrests in the case, according to the Associated Press.

"It's a sad day for Cleveland," Williams told reporters outside the home. "This fascination that we have with handguns, not just in this city but in this country, has to stop. This is a senseless loss of life."

Even three year olds are fascinated with hand guns and they have no sense of danger. Apparently some adults have no real awareness either.

DW I believe the owner of the gun in this case should be held responsible for the murder as the gun was loaded. Loaded why???????
And why was the gun not locked away????

I cannot imagine how this child will feel when he is older and finds out he shot his relative dead.

Apparently hand guns are primarily for defence against possible home invasion. They are therefore kept in easy to access locations, fully loaded and ready to fire.
Some homes have one in several rooms, just in case of a surprise attack.

IMO this is paranoia plus and why anyone would do this with children in the house escapes me entirely.

I agree with the police chief when he says "This fascination that we have with handguns, not just in this city but in this country, has to stop."
I just don't understand why he doesn't have much support.

This is what a one year old boy looks like

Shouldn't the laws protect both of them?

Trying to change the gun culture in this country is a fool's errand, and with the weather warming up expect a plethora of shootings in this country, two women shot here recently...

Yes, it seems they were shot by ex-boyfriends, and one in front of their child as I recall...

I can't even begin to imagine how the parents of those little darlings are feeling! What the heck is the matter with people that loaded guns are left lying around where little kids can get their hands on them!!!!

There are far too many of this kind of story in the US. I think whoever left a gun where a child could get it should be charged with murder.
