Set up a months worth of Meals on Wheels

i had Meals on Wheels for a few months here in Houston. Every weekday they brought a cold plate and a hot meal with milk and an orange juice. Sometimes I would freeze the hot meal for the weekend and have the cold sandwich plate. I would add chips or another fruit for a complete meal. They never asked for a donation but each month I would give them a check as it helped me so much after my fall and ER visit. I also enjoyed the fresh fruit as I would forget to order it when I ordered from Walmart.

I am getting from your thread that there are differences from place to place. Perhaps when meals are delivered there is less flexibility. When I was delivering I only had to know if a person wanted A or B.

One day I could not figure out if the people order A or B. My mind absolutely was not working and I panicked! I thought I had instant advanced Alzheimer's disease. When I finished my route I told the supervisor my problem and she suggested it could be my medication. I called the doctor's office as soon as I got home and was told I should not be driving while using the pain medication. That was the last prescribed pain medication I have used, and I told the doctor's office to note, I never want that kind of medication again. If a person has trouble figuring out if someone ordered A or B, there is a problem.
I wonder if the differences lie in these smaller communities.

Regardless they advertise that they're meeting nutritional needs. Two onion rings isn't my idea of meeting a nutritional need. They barely give them any food. It's horrible.
Not my experience with them here in the Houston area.As I said before they always bring a cold plate and a hot plate with veggies, fruit and milk.

So, I am two meals in. Just OK. A definate MEH. I much prefer to make my own food, so I will not miss it when I am done.
Each meal comes with a pint of 1% milk. I am not much of milk drinker, but I like having it for my morning cereal.

But at least I am trying it.

I think this may be good for you if the food is any good. I hope your Meals on Wheels are better than the ones I got! I attended the senior center for about a year before COVID hit. They served lunch which was really like dinners. The food was plentiful and good most of the time. About a month or so after the pandemic was in full swing, the center closed and they delivered Meals on Wheels to we members. The quality of the meals was poor to begin with and even more so when compared to what we got at the center. I called the nutrition center and told them to cancel my deliveries. When asked why, I told them the truth. Another concern was the sodium content of a couple of the meals. We weren't charged but of course, I'd tip the delivery person. The lunches at the center were $1.25 each but we got free coffe, tea, breakfast foods and once a week free bread.

I suppose it depends on how much you need it and how much you pay for it.

In this area, the hot meal with a sack lunch costs between $0.00 and $8.00/day.

If I was able to get around and had to pay the full price I would probably opt for a grocery delivery service once a week and prepare my own meals. We're lucky to live in an age when so many frozen and ready-to-eat entrees are available in the average grocery store.

My Mother had meals on wheels for a couple of years and opted for a three-day-a-week plan. The rest of the week she relied on her own snacks and groceries.

We may never need it, but it's comforting to know that it's available.

OK, just made the call to M.O.W. office to cancel delivery, effective immediatly. I really did not like them, and felt it would be a waste to keep getting them.
I would rather order what I want from Instacart, or go to the store myself. Todays meal was a very salty slice of turkey, bad cole slaw and a dinner roll. The roll was good. And seems the only fruit they give is pineapple chinks. Now, I like pineapple, but not every day.
So, starting tomorrow I am back to being on my own.

I knew a lady who used to get M.O.W. She said the meals tasted like "boiled balloons". She once ran her own food business, so, she was fussy.

What she did, was, cook a roast and keep it in the fridge .. from that, she would have sandwiches, or heat it up and have a baked potato & veg's with it - lasted a few days.

Well I'm not positive but I think dad said the meals were free. Sometimes the servers don't make enough food so they get chintzy with the servings. That's just how things are done around here. I'm glad you're getting your needs met.

Ours come from the Houston Food Bank. You can get them IF you need them. Your doctor has to say so. They do appreciate donations. When I was getting them I always gave them a check each month as a donation.

Well, now you know for sure, how the ones are, in your area, @Marie5656
And you know you tried it first-hand.
So you can plan, accordingly. I think that is all useful.

Plus, perhaps it is good to be able to tell your niece, as well,;)
that you did try it, and that you did try to like it! :D
