Sewing

My old Kenmore has given up the ghost. I'm lost without a sewing machine but I understand that the new ones have plastic gears and will not last long. Can anyone recommend a good machine with metal gears? Nothing fancy --just a straight and reverse and zig-zag stitch. I just mend and darn and alter and make simple things.
i have always had good luck with the Janome brand machines. They are not metal but they are relatively inexpensive and they sew like a dream.

The big leaf design of this Aloha shirt, it's colour and the leaf contrast, has such an appeal.
Seeing how fond of it I am, the lady made a pair of trousers to compliment the shirt.
The hat, I had made, by Gamble & Gunn. Whilst the shoes are also bespoke,
courtesy of Colin Johnson.

A collar and tie is still in much favour in my wardrobe, but when I do casual, it comes rather loud.

Much like the maroon shirt above, my lady made this one
along with the green trousers. The hat is, again, from
Gamble & Gunn and Colin Johnson made the shoes.

Here's the current project. The lady was just too busy to make the jacket, so I bought one. It needs her magic touch though. The brown buttons will become silver chrome, the button position will, like the button holes, all be improved. The lining will be refitted and the finish will look so much better.
The trousers, as in the pattern, have been made. The accessories are also ready to go. A silver fedora and grey & white shoes. The five photo rule means that you will have to click here to see the grey & white Argyle socks. They are listed as ladies but I have bought from there before and they are, more or less, unisex.

Hopefully she might have time to finish the jacket improvements/alterations this weekend. I can then show you the finished result.

Day before yesterday I altered some drapes I found at a thrift store last week. Today I made a basic sewing machine cover. Maybe tomorrow I'll make a sewing machine organizer.
It's nice to be sewing again; starting out easy. :)

My son says this design looks like it could repel predators. :ROFLMAO:

Great projects, @Medusa !
Creative and fun.

It's inspiring, too! I think that as soon as I get through some mandatory tasks over the next 10 days, that I will try doing something with sewing again, too.
It would be fun to talk sewing with you when you start again. :)

Someone on Reddit has just advised me to make the pin cushion out of red. What a great idea! Red will look great with black and white and I might actually have some red fabric somewhere.

Red sounds great for that!👍
Bold, like the black and white pattern. 🤩

I love the black/white sewing machine cover and the different patterns in b/w @Medusa.
Once upon a time, I did a lot of sewing. Mother was a seamstress at one time .. I loved the beautiful dresses she made my doll, out of the fancy remnants from wedding gowns and cocktail dresses. I enjoyed sewing little sundresses for my daughter when she was little. My daughter is the seamstress now.

Thank you, @Pinky! :)
You have sewing in your DNA. ;)
I used to make clothes for my girls and my middle child's dolls.
You know, I've been thinking, as I'm on a weight loss journey, I don't really want to make clothes for myself just now, but it might be fun to get a plain Barbie and hand sew some things.

Something occurred to me that might make you smile:
Nowadays the crown jewels are always zippered up nice & neat.
But it wasn't always so, there was a time whenever a fellow
felt that nudge from the bladder, he didn't hang around.
Reason being it wasn't a straightforward case of zipper down.

It was fumble, fumble, fumble as you
tried to get the buttons undone before
a wet patch appeared. I tell you, how I pay
the price for authenticity.

@horseless carriage, did you make these pants?

My wife made them, along with the shirt and most everything else in my wardrobe.
Well, she's very talented. :) Those pants are beautifully done.

I used to make clothes for my kids and myself when we were all younger. Looking forward to doing that again when I'm closer to the end of my weight loss journey. And having fun starting the hobby of making clothes for Barbie, now. :)

I had the same problem with my machine when I made myself a nightdress with flannelette. Apparently sewing machines don't like flannelette. I ended up sewing the whole thing by hand. However, I made a good job of it and I'm very pleased with it.
With stretchy materials, you need to get the correct needle and the correct thread. Thread is important. My advice would be to ask in the fabric shop for the thread which will go with your choice of material.
