I wouldn't have recognised her at all if I hadn't been told it was her...

Most people lose their good looks. As we get older, we look old. In my, not so humble, opinion, it's the least important aspect of a person. We are much more than the sum of our exterior parts. Beauty shines from within, and it is ageless.

I think she spent a lot of time in hotter climates. She lived in the desert too. Regardless of how she looks, she is one of my favorite actresses. The movies she made when she got older are outstanding and I watch them over and over as well as the ones when she was young. I have about 4 of her books on my Kindle and just bought another one recently. She writes as if she is sitting there talking to you. Her stories about her life are so interesting (at least to me they are).

Whilst I do agree that looks are unimportant, it's simply human nature to admire good looks. The model: Carmen Dell'orefice is such an example: In this photo Carmen is 85.

There's probably a bit of smoke and mirrors going on but Carmen is a lifelong non smoker and she has, or so she claims, never taken any kind of illegal substance.

Make-up can hide a multitude of sins, whereas I never smoked or drank and am lucky to have a clear olive skin with a few wrinkles. Having good genes does help.

I don't believe that's her. Her lips were much smaller. Who knows these days if that picture is real. I've seen so many that use these photoshopped pics of celebrities online with a headline "This is ___ you won't believe what she looks like now! Click here to see".

Everytime these people get a click they're getting money while showing their ads on the page you clicked. I never click on them...ever. If it's real then it's mean to sensationalize her decline.

A cousin of mine is a famous (mostly) TV actress. I clicked on
"This is ___ you won't believe what she looks like now! Click here to see".
for her. The pic just showed her presently beautiful self. My mistake: I told her about it. She was genuinely very upset to be used this way.

I recognize Shirley immediately in the first pic shown.

Anyone associated with show business is going to show the aging lines faster than a speeding bullet. All that make-up glop they have to wear, plays havoc with their skin. In addition to being under hot lights most of their working hours.

My mom was a show girl, chorine, and she spent hours after a show removing every trace of that make-up. She still had a beautiful complexion when she passed away. Not one wrinkle. I've acquired a few, but I never used any of that stuff. So, yes, at 91, my face is in better shape than Shirley's. But, I've not one scintilla of talent that lady has.

having Worked in TV production most of my career I'm aware of that more than most. They also however have access to the best beauty treatments

There seems to be a minority here who feel that my post was a criticism of Shirley..it was simply a surprise reaction at seeing her at 89...

In The UK Shirley is not in our entertainment sections on any kind of regular basis unlike the USA popular celebrity magazines ... so for me seeing her after about 40 years it was a surprise to see her much older

Da-yum! My mother died at 97 and didn't have wrinkle on her face. It's nice that "Black don't crack"! Like you HD, I wouldn't have recognized her. It's hard to believe she's that age too.
