Shocking Fat Content in this Sauce

I love my whole wheat pasta! Especially when served in one of the "white sauces" everyone makes. Last night, cooking up my veggies and pasta, I studied this one's label. Shocked the hell out of me! This particular product's fat calories constitute 90% of the total calories in the stuff! Almost like eating straight fat! They make it sound less ominous by the portion size: 1/4 cup, that's 4 tablespoons, 80 calories, calories from fat 70. 70/80 = 7/8 = 0.875, 88%. So, the whole jar is 560. My "portion" is usually 1/2 jar, lately cut back to 1/3. No wonder, I don't lose any weight! imp

I'm not surprised at the fat content in those creamy cheese sauces. Although I like the cream sauces, I rarely if ever eat them anymore. We always eat wheat spaghetti and pasta and usually have it with "homemade" red sauce, or sautee fresh sliced mushrooms in olive oil and serve that over the pasta. Sometimes we sautee some shrimp in olive oil and seasonings and use that...healthier and less fatty option than the cheese sauces for sure.

I started to buy something like that a couple weeks ago. I had the jar that said Alfredo Sauce in my cart, but I took it out, I just knew it'd be too fattening. I love that kind of stuff. Think of mixing 4 Cheeses and Alfredo Sauce together. :) My husband isn't a big pasta fan so I don't make it too often.

If I make a pasta meal , which is not often because it contains to any carbs, I use tomato based sauces as I have checked the white sauces and been horrified by the fat content

Off the subjuct sorta -- but whenever I've tried to cook whole wheat pasta it gets mushy. Is there a trick to cooking it? I cannot abide mushy pasta.

Now, I've found just the opposite! Where I find 10 minutes boiling for most plain pasta is just right "chewable" for me, but the whole wheat needs 15, or even 20, otherwise it seems "tough" to me.

Check that what you have is really 100% whole wheat. Many are packaged marked "whole wheat", but the ingredients show 50% whole wheat, the rest plain pasta. Those might prove "mushy", not sure. imp
