Shoe Polish

When I was in the military, and then throughout my working years, I kept my shoes polished nicely. However, in retirement, I seldom wear any shoes/boots which need to be polished. A few months ago, I found a tin of shoe polish in my closet that I didn't even know was there. When I opened it, it was pretty much all dried out....I tossed it.

@horseless carriage Some sharp shoes! I'd love to see what you look like all dressed up. My husband would have loved your shoe collection.
@Jules Yes I have several shoe polish colors here, including bronze, silver and a color called cognac. Some are the waxy kind, others are creams.
@Don M. I found that adding a little olive oil to the dried out shoe polish made it usable again.

Yesterday I learned something new about my husband during this minimizing process. There was a little brush that I was considering tossing. Apparently that’s the one he applies black polish with. I always use scraps of soft cotton.

My alias was Imelda too. I can’t walk past the shoe department without looking. I kept them on book shelves.

The last time I polished my shoes was in high school. We had a nasty gym teacher who was a stickler for pure white sneakers. The polish came in a bottle with the sponge on top, not sure if they even make it any more. I would keep the bottle in my gym locker and the last minute I'd dab it on, most of the time the stuff would soak right through to my socks.

I remember the sponge-ball dabber well, Ruth!

Everything from the little white baby shoes to nurses shoes, and everything in between.

Similar to this!

Also remember the fixed bottle applicator, too. The one I remember had a round ball tip.

I can't picture myself polishing shoes. And I don't think I own any pairs that require polishing. Living in these parts, one wears airy and comfortable shoes. Not much polishing can be done to sandals and tennis shoes. The few nice flats I own do not require any maintenance as I don't wear them that often; they are kept in shoe boxes too. Since retiring I gave away about 15 pairs of high heel shoes to Goodwill.158979877_4261634190516685_7198682338660004369_o[1].jpg

All dressed up? Thank you for such a kind compliment. My idea of all dressed up is bow tie and tails, but I guess you mean my everyday wear. Here are a couple of photos, first up is with my wife, the second is on my old pre-war bike, the one I use to exercise my hip replacement. The baggy trousers in the second photo are impossible to buy these days, my wife made them.

Sharp as 10 tacks! My husband was one who always wore shirts, ties and often suits. I even have a picture of him riding the stationary bike with his suit on. LOL You both look very nice, classy....love it !

You have such beautiful feet Pam!

From the abundance of badly scuffed shoes that I see people wearing today, I find that far fewer people take time to polish and otherwise take care of their leather shoes than was the case in my youth. My father could be relied upon to shine his shoes weekly, and got me into the habit. Some of the reason for shoe neglect could be that polish and other shoe care items are harder to find in stores, and cost considerably more than they once did. "Athletic shoes" are often worn much more often by many, and if they appear "distressed" that seems fine to their owners... 👞👢👟

I wear sneakers most of the time so I don't polish them. I do clean them when they need it, though.
